The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education is designed specifically for academic staff currently teaching in the higher education sector (e.g., teaching in universities, institutes of technology, or other designated higher education institutions). One of the central aims of this programme is to provide opportunities for academics to deepen their awareness and build their knowledge of a range of practical and theoretical issues fundamental to learning and teaching within higher education. Additionally, this programme aims to help academic teaching staff feel more confident about their teaching roles and the ways in which they can support student learning and enhance the learning experience for all students.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education is offered to recently appointed academics lecturing for the first time and more experienced academics. Although it is recommended that course participants are teaching throughout the duration of the Diploma, please note that participants must be teaching during the second semester of the course (i.e., September 2015 to December 2015). If you are unsure about whether your present teaching responsibilities meet the requirements for this course, please contact the Programme Director, Dr Úna Crowley.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education is comprised of four modules (totalling 60 ECTS) which are taken over two semesters.
In the main, there will be one scheduled session each week. Sessions will likely run each Friday (subject to confirmation). Sometimes it may be necessary to have additional classes. Please note that course participants will be advised in advance if attendance at other sessions is required. Participants in the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education due to begin in February 2016 will attend sessions from February 2016 to May 2016 and from September 2016 to January 2017.
Across the modules, lectures, seminars, workshops and group-led discussions will form the basis of the sessions.
All sessions are designed to offer course participants a platform through which they can experience, practise, reflect on and expand their repertoire of various strategies and techniques to promote the student learning experience. Thus, the course will help academics to develop their current and future teaching practice.
Academics who are currently teaching in a higher education institution (e.g., university, institute of technology) are welcome to apply for this programme. Teaching could include lecturing, demonstrating and facilitating seminars, tutorials or practicals. Applications are invited from NUI Maynooth academics and academics teaching in other higher education institutions across Ireland. There is no minimum prior higher education teaching experience needed to participate in the course
