Course Description

Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Software Engineering) at Maynooth University exposes graduates in computer science and related disciplines to the many facets of this complex area – the technical, the methodological, the organisational – so that successful participants will subsequently have the foundation to go on and lead major projects in software engineering in many industrial and commercial sectors.

Course Structure

Each module will be delivered as a series of intensive 1-day lectures. Each module also has associated practical work which can be completed off-site. This flexible delivery structure is designed to allow both full-time and part-time students to complete each module. Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Software Engineering) students have fewer modules and less-restrictive passing thresholds than students taking the MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) MHG50. The department operates a transfer policy between MHG56 and MGH50, for students that achieve appropriately high results on each of the modules. This is a Level 9 qualification.

Students are qualified for many jobs in the software industry where they will be able to apply the principles of good scientific software engineering practice. The course focuses on topics such as requirements engineering, system design, testing strategies and software development so that successful participants will have hands on experience and will be able to lead major software engineering projects.

Entry Requirements

Admission will normally be restricted to graduates who have achieved an honours degree in Computer Science or a discipline involving significant amounts of practical and theoretical issues in computer science. Highly qualified applicants from other disciplines may be considered. Note that this degree requires students to have a good initial knowledge of Computer Science, and ability in Mathematics. Applications from highly qualified students from Ireland's Institutes of Technology are welcomed. Ideally, applicants will have experience of working on industrial software engineering projects.
