'I was impressed with the lectures; the academics are experts in their field and linked theory to practice which made it immensely relevant and applicable.

'During my research project, my mentor was available for meetings and provided me with detailed feedback. As an international student studying in my second language, I found this support to be invaluable.

'I also enjoyed the contact with fellow classmates. I was amazed by the high quality of students. The wide variety of experiences and the diversity in the classroom added true value to my studies.

'I now work as International Account Director for a leading psychometirc assessment consultancy company. This job opportunity came up through a referral from the network that I was able to form at Birkbeck. I am able to leverage my knowledge gained through my studies and am delivering real value to my international clients. I continue to be in close contact with Birkbeck – and hope this will scout more talent at Birkbeck for our company.'

Vanessa Yusiasu

4065.jpg It was Vanessa’s colleagues in the UK HR department of BP who recommended Birkbeck to her, and when she researched the College she really liked the programme content.

One of the reasons that her colleagues suggested Birkbeck is that it would give Vanessa the chance to study alongside other HR professionals. She says: ‘A lot of the people on the course chose Birkbeck because they’d be studying with other professionals. It means that we can access another kind of knowledge – in addition to the theory we also have practical knowledge that we can share.’

‘You also benefit from the mix of nationalities in the class. In my second week I counted the nationalities in my classes and realised there were students from 16 different countries! It means that everyone brings a different perspective and different experiences to discussions.’

Vanessa hopes to take advantage of Birkbeck’s evening teaching by working part-time during the day while she is here and gaining professional experience in a new context.

In the future Vanessa hopes to drive organisational development forward in Brazil and beyond; helping to improve the lives of the people she works with through her capability to understand the needs of individuals and organisations and to be able to influence others to instigate change for the better. She says: ‘Receiving the Santander Scholarship was really important. The financial support is great, but it is also important to have your work and ambitions recognised.’

After one month in London, Vanessa says: ‘It’s a big change to give up your job after 10 years but I like London very much and the Birkbeck support for international students is really good. They offer a lot of sessions on developing your academic skills so you are equipped to meet the course requirements.’

‘The lecturers are very knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. Their expertise covers many areas. I have to choose a topic for my dissertation and I know that there will be an expert who can support me in the area I choose to focus on.’
