Professional Practice in Chinese Herbal Medicine MSc/ PG Dip

Course Description

Accredited by the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA).

The MSc/PGDip Professional Practice in Chinese Herbal Medicine at Middlesex University is a unique training programme in the UK and Europe. It provides an opportunity for those who already possess a bachelor degree, particularly for those who have a previous degree or equivalent level qualification in a healthcare related profession (e.g. GPs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, midwives, nurses, and complementary practitioners including acupuncturists), to study Chinese Herbal Medicine, and to gain a professional qualification as practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine.

This programme is designed to meet the requirements of the Core Curriculum of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA) for Western Herbal Medicine. The programme is fully accredited by the EHTPA, which is the umbrella body that monitors standards of education for herbal medicine in the UK, and graduates will therefore be eligible to apply for membership of a UK Herbal Medicine professional body. In April 2011, the government announced the intention to statutorily regulate medical herbalists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which will assume responsibility for the accreditation of all herbal and traditional medicine courses and the registration of successful graduates. The EHTPA is working with the HCPC to manage this transfer.

Taking into account each individual’s current professional knowledge and previous training, we will tailor their study in a way that best suits their needs, whilst ensuring attainment of the EHTPA’s requirement to produce graduates who are competent, safe and caring herbal practitioners. The duration of training will therefore vary for different individuals, as it may be possible to offer exemptions from some aspects of study on the basis of previous learning.

During this intensive training course students will be given a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of Chinese herbal medicine, including its history and philosophy, as well as instruction in botany, herbal materia medica and major active components, herbal formulary, and clinical applications of herbal medicines. Among other subjects studied are diagnostics, clinical sciences, professional development and research, and nutrition. Students will also benefit from our specialist Library and dedicated facilities for laboratory work and clinical skills, including undertaking clinical training at our partner institution, the Asanté Academy of Chinese Medicine, staffed by highly qualified and experienced Chinese Medicine practitioners.
