The Master in Strategy and Management (STR) is one of the specialisations within the two-year Master of Science (MSc) programme in Economics and Business Administration at NHH.
Strategy and Management focuses on how managers and employees can develop businesses to become efficient and competitive whilst maintaining corporate social responsibility. How can firms create value and develop a competitive advantage? How can business leaders through their employees carry out necessary strategic modifications? What is good management and what fosters productive employees?
This specialisation will teach students about strategic analysis and choices, how businesses can manage strategic change and organisational development, as well as how to manage and develop companies' human resources. The program also provides insight into how new challenges can be identified, analyzed, and developed in a way that allows for increased profitability and more efficient use of resources. Specifically, we focus on the role of management and employee-cooperation to promote strategic goals and to secure the profitability of a business.
Strategy and Management is all about taking a long-term perspective, making reasonable analyses of different competitive situations and the resources of the organisation. It is about being able to see opportunities when they present themselves, and to take advantage of them. In the programme, we aim to develop these skills in two ways: (1) through courses based on both economic theory and behavioral science (from e.g. sociology and psychology), and (2) through the integration of theory and practice, by refining practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge.
The courses of the programme divides into two themes:
- Strategic analysis: How can companies analyze external and internal conditions in order to get answers to where and how the company should compete?. - Management and implementation: How to ensure that the organisation will support and improve business strategy? How to lead and develop human resources, which at the individual and group level can help to promote your firm’s goals and strategy?
Flexible Programme Structure
The MBM programme has the following general structure; it consists of twelve courses and a thesis, adding up to a total of 120 ECTS credits. Students select six courses within the ENE specialication as their major. By selecting three of the remaining six courses from one of the other specialisations offered by NHH, students will build a minor concentration. This gives the students an in-depth understanding of a second field in addition to their major. The combination of a major and a minor provides the students with a broader perspective and an expertise that will give them an advantage in the job market. Normally one would follow courses in three semesters and dedicate the final semester to the thesis. The programme is fully taught in English.
The school is the Norwegian member of the prestigious CEMS network (The Global Alliance in Management Education). CEMS offers the CEMS Master's in International Management (MIM), the most international and culturally diverse MSc in the market and ranked as one of the best in the world by Financial Times since the ranking began in 2005.
The Double Degree programme is a cooperation between NHH and other highly renowned institutions, like HEC Paris in France and Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada. After completion of the programme you will be awarded a master degree from both NHH and the partner institution. Furthermore, NHH participates in exchange programs with more than 130 institutions in over 40 countries.
The most recent survey shows that approximately three out of four NHH students find employment before graduation, and the majority of all 2014 graduates have a salary between 50-60.000 EURO.
