MA by Research

Course Description

Research projects are proposal driven and may be practice-led. While they may be self-contained, the emphasis is on research training. Projects are generally designed to test appropriate methods and theories in the chosen area of study and may be work-based.

You will join a research community of over 50 researchers 45% of whose outputs are classified as 3* and 4*.

You will have the benefit regular tutorials with a supervisory team and associate membership of one of the MIRIAD Research Centres in Art, Architecture, Craft, Design, Media and Visual Culture.

You will be required to complete a thesis of 30,000 words or 10 – 15,000 words if the submission is accompanied by material in other than written form.

Generic and subject-specific research training is compulsory.

Special Features

The research training offered by the programme is recognised by the AHRC which supports the regional research training network in the creative arts and industries, PARCNorthWest (Practice as Research Consortium). The consortium consists of 13 participating departments from 12 Higher Education Institutes encompassing the range of the creative arts from theories and histories to the practices and professions of art, architecture, craft, design, creative writing, media, music and performance.

The MIRIAD Postgraduate Programme was one of four ‘new’ universities to gain funding for postgraduate studies within the Arts & Humanities Research Council Block Grant Partnership: ‘Only research organisations which have shown strong evidence of excellent strategic planning for, and delivery of high-quality postgraduate research and training have received BGPs.
