MA/MFA Fashion: Menswear

Course Description

MA Fashion Menswear is situated within a suite of postgraduate fashion provision. It aims to develop visionary design thinking. It has a focus on the cultural nuances and perspectives associated with the design, fabrication and dissemination specifically associated with the development of innovative and culturally relevant menswearYou will be based in an interdisciplinary studio environment with opportunities for collaboration with external industry partners and to link in with graphics, branding, textiles for fashion and knitwear. An optional element provides broader research perspectives, through media, digital design and by examining the urban conditions which underpin fashion’s cultural position. You will be encouraged to produce and disseminate design solutions, which challenge traditional fashion outputs through material and virtual responses.

The MA Fashion: Menswear is made up of five units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also have the opportunity to extend your experience in the professional sphere either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – what ever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Fashion: Menswear award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This route is focussed on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

In the first year you will study units in; Design Intention, Design Proposition, Professional Platforms, Major Project. An option of one of the following: Digital Futures, Contested Territories, Health and Wellbeing, The Museum and the City - The City as Museum, Negotiated Study, Object, Women Artists and Surrealism.

In the second year you will study units in; Contextualising, Realisation and Publication.

Special Features

Based in an interdisciplinary studio environment, which encourages collaboration with external industry partners and facilitates links with graphics, textiles for fashion and knitwear and their associated making and digital facilities.

Optional element provides focus for incorporating media practices, digital design and production.

Entry Requirements

You will normally have an undergraduate honours degree or a degree-equivalent postgraduate diploma or a professional qualification. Alternatively, you may be admitted if you can demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard. In addition you also need to submit a Digital Portfolio.

Course Fees

UK/EU FT students: £6,480 (per year) /£1,080 per 30 credit unit. Non-EU FT international students: £12,500 (per year)/ £2,085 per 30 credit unit.
