There are calls for enhanced leadership to shape a more caring culture, greater engagement with local communities, and practice development to facilitate excellence in health and social care. This part-time Masters programme provides the quality of applied education required to meet these and future challenges
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops in 2-day blocks with occasional weekend attendance. Assessment is through a mixture of work-based projects, written assignments and research projects.
You will study the following units: •Critical Reflection on self as leader and leadership practice Leadership begins with individual thinking about yourself as a leader; your role in the organisation and the ways in which leadership is changing. Leadership is also about personal change and development, using the skills of coaching you will be able to support others. You will reflect upon your own leadership strengths supported by self- assessment and psychometric test to identify how you can develop your leadership skills. •Leadership Strategies for Performance This unit explores how leaders can deliver performance, have an impact and lead change. We review the leadership strategies for delivering competitive advantage and explore how leaders shape organisational performance through culture, agile use of resources, motivating performance and creating the conditions for a fulfilling high performance work place. You will develop action learning and appreciative change skills within the unit. •Sustainable Leadership for the Future Leadership is played out in a wider context and in this unit you will explore the broader responsibilities of leadership. You will assess the complexities of ethical leadership and the challenges of business ethics and sustainability by developing a moral imagination and the ability to analyse sustainability issues for the future. •Investigating Business Practice In the above unit you will work on a live business problem, from the setting of objectives through to the production and presentation of recommendations for a business audience. The unit allows you to bring together the key elements from the programme so far, to tackle a leadership issue in a helath and social care context. •Research Methods The above unit provides you with the analytical and investigative knowledge and skills to conduct an in-depth leadership research project for your dissertation.
This professional qualification is designed to enhance the career prospects of those working in health and social care policy and management. Graduates of the course may also progress to further related study.
The MSc Leadership in Health and Social Care programme is unique in terms of the way we have designed it and the way it is delivered by our team of leadership specialists. The programme is about enabling you to develop your own distinctive approach to leadership by building on your personal strengths. This programme will help you to think differently, and to develop your approach to leadership by applying and putting ideas in to practice. We aim to help you to reflect on what you personally bring to leadership by the use of coaching, emotional intelligence and MBTI. All the assessment are applied to the workplace, enabling you to identify key Health or social care issues and priorities to for part of your analysis. The programme is delivered in a ‘state of the art’ Business School; where we adopt a facilitated approach to learning using a range of different approaches such as ‘action learning sets’ workshops and support via the use of a virtual learning space to support learning outside of the Business School; You will have the opportunity to network with other senior managers and to participate in workplace shadowing; attend master class workshops with guest speakers from a wide range of backgrounds. The programme is flexible and does offer the opportunity to ‘step on and step off’ the programme; you have the opportunity to take the programme as a staged approach and just complete the equivalent of PG Certificate (60 credits) or PG Dip (120 credits); the MSc (120 credits)
A good undergraduate UK honours degree or equivalent (minimum 2:2) in any subject. Applicants who lack the normal academic entry requirements may also be considered. Such applicants would need degree equivalent recognised professional qualifications or significant relevant management experience.
