MSc Leadership

Course Description

“To survive in the twenty-first century we’re going to need a new generation of leaders - leaders not managers.” Leadership expert Warren Bennis

Here at Manchester Met Business School we recognise that leadership is central to the long term success of organisations and that effective leaders can make the difference in the workplace of today. Leaders do this by motivating their workforce to achieve sustainable performance and by enabling them to cope with the changing nature of both the external and internal environment.

The MSc Leadership is a challenging and innovative programme designed to meet the needs of professionals who want to inspire and motivate their teams for greater organisational success.

The MSc Leadership is delivered in two day blocks; a typical attendance requirement would be 3 x 2 days spread over a 3 month period for one 30 credit unit. The teaching is delivered through the use of group work in a workshop type environment.

You will study the following units:

■Critical Reflection on self as leader and leadership practice
Leadership begins with individual thinking about yourself as a leader; your role in the organisation and the ways in which leadership is changing. Leadership is also about personal change and development, using the skills of coaching you will be able to support others. You will reflect upon your own leadership strengths supported by self- assessment and psychometric test to identify how you can develop your leadership skills.

■Leadership Strategies for Performance
This unit explores how leaders can deliver performance, have an impact and lead change. We review the leadership strategies for delivering competitive advantage and explore how leaders shape organisational performance through culture, agile use of resources, motivating performance and creating the conditions for a fulfilling high performance work place. You will develop action learning and appreciative change skills within the unit.

■Sustainable Leadership for the Future
Leadership is played out in a wider context and in this unit you will explore the broader responsibilities of leadership. You will assess the complexities of ethical leadership and the challenges of business ethics and sustainability by developing a moral imagination and the ability to analyse sustainability issues for the future.

■Investigating Business Practice
In the above unit you will work on a live business problem, from the setting of objectives through to the production and presentation of recommendations for a business audience. The unit allows you to bring together the key elements from the programme so far, to tackle a leadership issue in context.

■Research Methods
The above unit provides you with the analytical and investigative knowledge and skills to conduct an in-depth leadership research project for your dissertation.

The programme is flexible and does offer the opportunity to ‘step on and step off’ the programme; you have the opportunity to take the programme as a staged approach and just complete the equivalent of PG Certificate (60 credits) or PG Dip (120 credits); the MSc (120 credits)

Effective and professional leadership is clearly recognised by organisations as a key area in achieving success. This programme provides an excellent basis for career development either within your role, occupation or profession or as a basis for enhanced flexibility.

■ We aim to help you to reflect on what you personally bring to leadership by the use of coaching, emotional intelligence and MBTI.
