The Master of Commerce in Business is a modern business degree that enables graduates to study units across a range of disciplinary areas offered by the Division of Economic and Financial Studies. The degree provides an opportunity to acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of business with a concentration in at least one major area of business activity. The Master of Commerce in Business will provide a solid foundation for graduate careers in the challenging and rewarding world of business. To hold a quality Masters degree is a distinct advantage in the business world today.
In business, graduates need many skills. While it is important to be proficient in a particular business discipline, such as finance, marketing, accounting or commercial law, it is also necessary to understand the interrelationships that exist among all core areas of business. Team work is a feature of modern business practice and the ability to understand and communicate with colleagues from other business disciplines is important. To equip graduates for modern business practices, the MCom in Business promotes both depth and breadth in business studies through a program of self-selected core and elective units.
The Master of Commerce in Business requires the completion of eight postgraduate units. Three or four units must be selected from a single disciplinary area and this constitutes a "major area of study". Remaining units must be taken from at least two other disciplinary areas.
There are ten disciplinary areas in the MCom in Business. These are: Accounting Actuarial Studies Commercial Law Economics Entrepreneurship and Innovation Finance Information Systems and Technology Marketing Management, Organisations and Society Tourism and Hospitality
Students who have not completed appropriate business units as part of a prior degree are required to complete a preliminary program of study before taking the standard eight unit component of the MCom or MIB degree. The purpose of a preliminary program is to build essential foundation knowledge required for successful completion of Masters level units.
