Among the methodologies you will cover in the Operations Research track are simulations and regression analysis. There are many business situations in which these tools can be used. For example: to organise the logistics of public transport timetables; to optimise distribution channels for telecoms providers; to maximise efficiency and minimise cost for container companies; and many more.

A recent example of research carried out is the Dutch railway timetable: the system was being privatised, which led to serious reliability issues. To counteract this, the timetable had to be totally updated. The work involved analysis of practical and strategic planning problems, and the development of mathematical models and algorithms to solve them.

Internship opportunities
A unique feature of this track is the opportunity to combine an eight-week internship with your master’s thesis. This will give you the opportunity to apply theoretical research in a real-world context.

Operations Research is a 1-year, full-time programme and is taught entirely in English. Graduates will a master's degree in Econometrics and Operations Research with a specialisation in Operations Research.

Business and economic problems can use several methods to solve them. In the Operations Research track, you will use optimisation techniques, such as algorithms, for this purpose. You will also use computer technologies and programming techniques to reach solutions.

What will you learn?
Operations Research is about using technology but, more importantly, it’s about applying that technology in business situations to solve real problems. The track will give you the means not only to use computer programming to your advantage, but also to communicate your proposed solutions to the business decision makers effectively.

At the end of the track, you will be able to:

• develop and implement software to find solutions for logistical scheduling problems
• offer good advice on finding technical solutions to business and economic problems

Having completed the track in Operations Research, you will be well suited to a technical role, providing decision-making advice and support to management teams. Later, you will be well qualified to take those decisions as a manager yourself.

The internship is an excellent chance to gain work experience in a company, field or industry that interests you. And you never know – you may even be offered a job at the end of it!
