Leadership and Innovation Management (Diploma, MSc)

Course Description

The innovation process is complex and its management challenging. This programme will help you understand and develop skills needed to manage the innovation process in any type of organisation.

The need for innovation and its importance for survival and growth are now recognised by many types of organisation. Coupled with entrepreneurial behaviour, the effective management of the innovation process is essential to the successful implementation of new and improved business products, services and processes.

The Leadership and Innovation Management programme is specially designed for managers who are expected to contribute to the functional and strategic management of their organisation. The programme develops an understanding of the importance of entrepreneurial attitude in individuals and organisations, and encourages critical thinking in order to evaluate the factors affecting successful innovation.

The programme aims to:
- Develop an understanding of the importance of an entrepreneurial attitude in individuals and organisations, mainly through development of both their technical knowledge and skills, and their conceptual and analytical abilities;

- Develop students' critical thinking in order to evaluate innovation as a process through the use of contemporary research methods;

- Investigate the barriers to innovation and encourage students to analyse obstacles which prevent the successful implementation of new ideas

- Enable participants to study entrepreneurial behaviour both as an essential part of new business start-up and as a competency required by employers in the modern business environment.


The programme is offered on a part-time basis. The minimum period of study for the award of MSc is thirty calendar months. The minimum period of study for the award of Postgraduate Diploma is eighteen months.


The Diploma programme is part-time and will normally extend over a period of 18 months. It involves a combination of short courses, distance learning and work-based assignments and projects. The programme is delivered via block release and learning methods are tailored to participants' needs. The MSc element of the programme is delivered over a period of 12 months and involves a series of taught sessions covering research methods and project design.


The programme starts with an induction event, and consists of a number of core modules covering the essential elements contributing to business competitiveness, as well as three modules which explore innovation, entrepreneurial behaviour and strategy.

To ensure maximum relevance and usefulness to both the participant and organisation, the topic of work-based assignments and projects is agreed between the participant and the university, to address a specific issue which is impacting on the participant's area of work.

Entry Requirements

Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from a UK or recognised overseas University with a Second Class honours or equivalent; Applicants who have achieved the academic requirements for corporate membership of a British Chartered Professional Institute (equivalent to QCF level 6 or above) ; Applicants who hold any other relevant qualification or professional experience as determined by the Programme Director with a reasonable level of formal academic education.
