Networked Communications (MSc)

Course Description

Engineers with a good knowledge of mobile communications systems are much sought after and careers in this industry offer both high rewards and opportunities to work on the latest technical advances.

We work closely with industry and understand the skills and knowledge required to operate successfully in this field.

Our specialised curriculum comprehensively covers the principles and techniques involved. It will equip you with the toolset needed to design and develop next generation mobile communication and wireless systems. As fresh technologies emerge in this ever-expanding field, you will have the essential formal theory and confidence in your practical skills to support your long-term career development.

Core study areas include MATLAB, communication networks, personal radio communications, and channel coding for networks and a research project.

Optional study areas include research project, communication network security, mobile network technologies, advanced networks and advanced individual project.

See the website http://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/programmes/departments/eese/networked-communications/

Programme modules

All modules are compulsory
Semester 1:
- MATLAB as a Scientific Programming Language
- Communication Networks
- Personal Radio Communications
- Channel Coding for Networks

Semester 2:
- Research Project
- Communication Network Security
- Mobile Network Technologies
- Advanced Networks
- Advanced Individual Project

How you will learn

Practical skills in networked systems and businesses are developed to industry standard through laboratory work, including the use of Network Analyser to analyse Wi-Fi traffic, monitor Wi-Fi signals and traffic and to learn network behaviours and user characteristics. The course is regularly updated to accommodate scale, data-rate and security changes.

- Assessment
Examinations are held in January and May, with coursework, practical laboratory assessments, and group work throughout the programme. The individual research project is assessed by written report and viva voce in September.

Facilities

You will use professional network performance measurement equipment during the course.

Project work may also benefit from an extensive Network Testbed which was established by the donation of 8 IP routers, 4 switches and associated interconnections from CISCO.

Other nodes and approximately 30 end stations have been added to the Testbed, along with 4 Monitor Stations with synchronised timing. This provides an instrumented Internet Testbed with considerable complexity and flexibility.

Experimental work on network performance measurement and network abuse detection is undertaken with this Testbed which may be used in appropriate projects.

Careers and further study

Graduates of this course will have the practical skills and theoretical knowledge for employment in a variety of communications engineering roles for example: network managers; designers and analysts; Cisco engineers; and router design engineers.
Your graduate skill set will be particularly attractive to companies with a global or distributed workforce and operation. Many graduates stay on to study for a PhD.

Scholarships and bursaries

Scholarships and bursaries are available each year for UK/EU and international students who meet the criteria for award.
