Grad Cert Adult Cardiac Catheter Laboratory Practice


Course Description

Course units:
The new programme is run in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation, British Cardiovascular Society, College of Radiographers and Society for Cardiological Science and Technology (SCST).
It consists of 3 units each of 20 credits.

The units associated with the Grad Cert in Adult Cardiac Catheter Laboratory Practice are:
– Diagnostic Imaging
– Cardiac Physiology
– Patient Management

Course description:
This course conforms to the Department of Health’s workforce reconfiguration strategy, developing an interdisciplinary cardiac catheter workforce.

It will run over 12 months laterally extending the skills set of cardiac nurses, cardiac radiographers and cardiac physiologists to:
– Acquire the knowledge and skills to undertake a range of non-medical clinical activities performed during elective angiography
– Acquire the necessary practice competencies within a Trust protocol driven framework
– Negotiate with other health care practitioners and patients, in order to respond effectively to patients undergoing elective angiography
– Develop an ability to deliver an effective cardiac catheter laboratory service.

Career opportunities:
On completion, students will be able to contribute to the effective and flexible delivery of cardiac catheter services.

Typical background of applicant:
Qualified health care professionals in cardiac nursing, cardiac radiography, cardiac physiology who are employed in a cardiac catheter laboratory for 25 hours a week, or are to be guaranteed full-time practice learning in a cardiac catheter laboratory, and professionals who have two years experience in a cardiac catheter laboratory.

The selection criteria will include the following:
– Intermediate Life Support Certificate
– Selection by interview
– Support from service manager and access to appropriate work environment during training.
