Professional Development in Occupational Therapy (MSc/PGDip/PgCert)

Course Description

The MSc in Professional Development in Occupational Therapy offers occupational therapists the opportunity to build a masters level qualification around their own area of practice and personal development plan. The flexible programme focuses upon core skills of leadership, research application, and critical thinking applied to the practice of occupational therapy in the context of multi-disciplinary working in health and social care services. The programme consists of six taught modules and a dissertation which can be completed between two years full-time and up to six years part-time.

You can choose from a range of Masters (Level 7) taught modules available within the School. You must complete six modules comprising:

- Two compulsory core
- One (from four) additional core
- Two Occupational Therapy modules
- One optional module for the PgDip and a further 60 credit dissertation related to Occupational Therapy for the MSc

Dissertation options include: research project, work based project or a systematic review.

Students who complete one core module and two Occupational Therapy modules will be eligible for a PgCert award.

- Developing skills and competence in professional practice

- Ethics consultation and best interests decision making

Occupational Therapy Modules:
- Advanced group skills for occupational therapists;
- Outcome measures in occupational therapy
- Theoretical perspectives in context: advancing occupational therapy practice
- Occupational therapy for the older person
- Applied leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy

Examples of Optional Modules:
- An introduction to counselling skills for health care professionals
- Introduction to economic evaluation for AHPs
- Leadership skills for allied health professionals
- Teaching and learning in practice settings (AHPs)


Modules in this programme will contribute to the continuous development of your occupational therapy practice through the acquisition of advanced skills and higher levels of knowledge which are required for the effective performance of a complex role.
