Bath Spa University has a long tradition of Teacher Education dating back 60 years. Newton Park was officially opened as Bath Teacher Training College in 1950 and the University is now the largest provider of Teacher Education in the area. Each year we recruit a diverse group of around 500 prospective teachers to a wide range of programmes in Teacher Education, leading to the award of either the Postgraduate or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, both with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Highly rated by Ofsted
The quality regulator Ofsted awarded Bath Spa University Grade 1 'Outstanding' for the overall effectiveness of our programmes leading to qualified teacher status in primary and secondary education. The Ofsted report praises the Teacher Education programme at the University, noting its “extremely good reputation”, its “very clear and well-articulated philosophy, which has the needs of learners at its heart”, the “outstanding” school-based elements of the training, and the fact that the training and assessment are “universally highly regarded”.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses
We run pre-Teacher Education subject knowledge enhancement courses, which are designed for graduates who are interested in teaching a secondary priority subject but who may not necessarily have a degree in that subject. The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own. They run prior to the Teacher Education programme and vary in length depending on the subject, which include modern languages, mathematics and physics.
Having completed a degree in Education at Bath Spa I wanted to remain at the University to complete my teacher training due to the supportive staff, passion for education and focus on students and their needs. The course offers a range of in-school experiences complemented by taught sessions.
The emphasis is on teaching and learning strategies (and not curriculum content) and has been extremely valuable through placements. The diversity of my studies at undergraduate level has well equipped me for the PGCE and given me a greater understanding of issues pupils and schools may have.
The beautiful setting of the University makes you want to come to lectures to escape from the city! Before studying on this course I already had a degree in Mathematics at The University of Bath, I then came to study here and achieved a first in Education and Psychology. I have managed to obtain a job as a Mathematics Teacher at a local school from September 2008.
I only have good things to say about my experiences at Bath Spa and really appreciate the dedication of staff to individual needs here.
PRIMARY AND EARLY YEARS PGCE (5-11 AGE RANGE)
I have always wanted to be a teacher and the programme at Bath Spa University was perfect! It included a wide range of focus areas, all of which are essential in the development of effective practitioners. It also incorporated a variety of assessment methods; from subject knowledge and understanding, to teaching ability and skills. The programme had a great balance between time spent at university, to develop the knowledge, confidence and skills required for teaching, and time spent in schools to put these skills into practice.
Having completed a degree in Education and Geography at Bath Spa, I was familiar with the university and knew the teacher education programme was very highly rated. Everybody is very welcoming and friendly and there are loads of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. The course leaders and lecturers are also all very approachable and supportive.
Primary - 2:1, any discipline, 5 GCSE's at C or above (inc maths, English & science) Secondary - Good honours degree in the subject you want to teach, 5 GCSE's including maths and English.
