Supporting Older Children and Young People with Dyslexia / SpLDs PG Cert

Course Description

This course is specially designed for those working, or who intend to work, with children and young people over 11 years old who may have specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) linked to dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, or Asperger Syndrome and who may perhaps also be experiencing behavioural and emotional issues.

It will help you understand and explore their educational challenges and needs for support, within a rigorous framework of scholarship and practical placements, enabling you to make informed positive changes which are learner-centred.

Accreditation is currently being sought from the British Dyslexia Association.

Careers linked to this qualification include teaching, Special Educational Needs Co-ordination (SENCO), social work, working with excluded youth and young offenders, and psychology, but it is also relevant to those undertaking applied research, looking for a change in career, and for those who are parents or carers.


You will be assessed through a combination of practical placements and written critical reflections on practice within a practice-based portfolio, observations and review of practice, case-study project (practice-based) and an assessed oral presentation.

Professional accreditation

Accreditation is currently being sought from the British Dyslexia Association, to provide appropriate professional qualifications in working with older children and young people with Dyslexia / SpLDs.

After the course

There are a range of settings and roles for which an understanding of, and ability to help, young people and older children with one or more specific learning disabilities is required – in schools, childrens’ organisations, special education providers, care homes, young offenders institutions, and exclusion units.

Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate at London Metropolitan University can also continue on an academic route to complete a Postgraduate Diploma or MA in the same area, or any of our related postgraduate awards such as the Education MA, and the Professional Doctorate in Education.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to have: A first degree from a UK university or equivalent a full. Current DBS check, completed before commencing the course and be current for the duration of the course. Mature applicants (over the age of 21) who do not meet the standard entry requirement are most welcome to apply.
