Below provides a rough outline of a typical three-year professional development programme for a teacher in Fairview International School. (Note: Details within each year may vary)
In the first year, you learn more about teaching in Fairview, in an international school and the IB programme. To equip you with basic pedagogy and encourage a reflective approach towards your professional development, you complete your first year with a Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers (CIDT); sponsored by the School. This is especially beneficial for new teachers without formal training or experience in teaching and/or teaching in an international school.
The second year focuses and prepares you in the theories and methodologies of research. The emphasis of the professional development programme at this stage is to encourage an active approach to inquiring into your own teaching practice. You then develop and formalise your research area/interest and its proposal, and conduct a pilot study at the end of the year.
Finally, in the third year, teachers carry out their research and write up their thesis. At the end of this year, teachers also have the opportunity to apply for the IB Advanced Certificate in Teaching and Learning Research with the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) which can only be gained because: - Fairview’s Master of Arts in Education is an IB-recognised programme - Fairview International University College is an IB-recognised university - You have had 3 years full-time teaching experience in Fairview; an IB World School (To learn more about Fairview as an IB educator certificate university, please visit: http://ibo.org/programmes/pd/qualifications/universityannouncements.cfm)
