Course Description

Teach Religious Education to GCSE and A Level

Graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (comprising 120 Masters level credits) plus recommendation Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

This course aims to produce enthusiastic teachers able to inspire interest and engagement with the religious education curriculum.

You will develop the skills required to help pupils understand the important part that religion plays in everyday life for many people and communities plus the impact that religion has on wider society, nationally and internationally.

The course will introduce you to the aims, objectives and methods of teaching religious education as defined by the National Curriculum for Religious Education.

The production and evaluation of teaching materials are key aspects of the course as are lesson planning and evaluation. You will also have opportunities to develop your skills in practical work through ‘hands on’ activities.

The programme provides an intensive training experience, focused on equipping you with the skills, knowledge and attributes you will need when embarking on your teaching career.

It is designed to meet the requirements of the Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status and also support the development of your:
•critical understanding of education theory and practice relevant to the subject area
•reflective practice linked to professional development
•practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
•understanding and application of subject knowledge

The programme includes a mix of on-campus and school/college-based training, with the latter becoming predominant as you progress through the course. This is supplemented with online e-learning activities via LJMU’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

The University element of the programme is based around six modules focusing on:
•Professional Practice
•Developing Reflective Professional Practice
•Subject Pedagogy in Biology
•Pedagogy in Practice
•Learning Teaching and Assessment

Your professional development will be monitored and supported throughout the duration of the course. You will leave with an e-portfolio and a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) plus well developed reviewing and action planning skills that will stand you in good stead for your professional career.

School-based training

You will spend 120 days in school-based training. Here, teaching will predominantly be at Key Stage 3 and 4, although there may be the opportunity to gain experience with Post-16 level.

Experienced subject teacher mentors, working in partnership with LJMU tutors, will support your training in partner secondary schools. The excellent relationships established between LJMU and partner schools will help to ensure that you have a successful placement experience.

Enrichment experiences

You will be expected to engage with a variety of enrichment experiences that challenge and extend their repertoire of skills and enhance employment potential. Such activities may include supporting learners in community based education projects and supplementary schools, vocational education enrichment placements in industry and cultural organisations, and participation in school and university teaching projects.

Entry Requirements

You should hold, or be expected to achieve, at least a 2:2 Honours degree classification (or recognised equivalent) with at least 50% content in a relevant subject area (such as Religious Studies, Theology or Biblical Studies). If your degree is in a different subject area (such as Arts and Humanities, Sociology and Social Anthropology, Philosophy or Politics) but you have a knowledge of and enthusiasm for the study of religion please also apply.
