This PGDE course is an intensive period of study which aims to develop reflective, informed and committed professionals who are confident in teaching in any Early Years setting.

A key part of the programme is the professional experience you will acquire thanks to our partnerships with schools and nurseries. This, along with University-based input will provide you with the opportunity to develop your ability to plan, teach and manage children’s learning.

By completing three placements with different age groups, Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1, and in different settings and socio-economic contexts, you will gain a greater knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning in the Early Years.

You will have the opportunity to complete an enhanced placement to extend and develop your interests within the wider context of Early Years education. The placement will add breadth to your experience, and extend your knowledge and understanding of Early Years practice. You can choose to either complete an international trip to Sweden, with a placement in a Swedish pre-school or complete a placement in a range of special schools, or a placement in a Children’s Centre working with babies and families from 0-3.

There is also a strong commitment throughout the course to outdoor learning. We have links with Forest School practitioners and strive to enable all teacher trainees to experience this aspect of early years practice.

The programme is designed to not only meet the criteria outlined in Qualifying to Teach (the standards that all newly qualified teachers must meet), but exceed these standards and in doing so, recognise the importance of having a secure knowledge and understanding of Early Years pedagogy.

You will be taught by experienced LJMU academics and School mentors, who have worked collaboratively on the development of the course, giving you access to a wide range of ideas about teaching plus examples of effective practice from experts in the field.

Central to our philosophy is a commitment to learning and teaching through play and interaction. This should not be seen as a ‘soft option’, but as a challenging and rigorous approach, which requires high level planning, organisation, intervention and assessment.

Although there are no simple answers, our emphasis is on developing teachers who will examine, analyse, research and reflect upon their practice in order to provide the very best and most appropriate learning opportunities for all children.

The School of Teacher Education and Professional Learning believe in principled partnership and seek to build a deep relationship with schools and other organisations across the region. In recognition of this, our approach is one characterised by flexibility, collaboration, and inclusivity.

We want partners to have a real impact in shaping the development of initial teacher training and professional learning in their schools to ensure that the outcomes are tailored to meet their needs as well as those of future entrants to the profession. We will work with partners with commitment to:
•providing high quality support tailored to the needs of partners that impacts on pupil achievement
•a fully collaborative ITT partnership with an clear role for schools in recruitment, curriculum design, delivery, management and assessment
•developing the role of LJMU to support school improvement through professional development of teachers and leaders
•using the expertise of LJMU to support action research as a vehicle for improving impact on learning.

Entry Requirements

Nationally, all PGDE courses require GCSE qualifications at grade C (or the equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science prior to applying for the course. LJMU runs GCSE Equivalence Examinations throughout the year. For further information visit View Website
