The field of ‘Active Ageing’ continues to attract attention around the world because of increased longevity and a greater need for promoting health and enhancing the quality of life in ageing populations. Consequently, the knowledge of integrating ‘Exercise’ into ‘Ageing’ is increasingly becoming one of the fastest growing areas of applied sciences. At present, employers are preferably looking for graduates with fundamental knowledge of different aspects of ageing who are capable of making a significant contribution to maintaining the health of the aged population. The multidisciplinary structure of this programme is ideally suited to this purpose and targets students with widely diverse backgrounds.
This programme has been designed to provide a critical understanding of the integration between exercise and ageing, and how these fundamental principles can be applied to different settings such as health-related injury prevention, rehabilitation, and exercise intervention strategies in ageing exercisers and Master athletes. The multidisciplinary structure of the School of Health Sciences with recognised research-active academics in Sport and Exercise Science, Human Biology, Psychology, Nutrition and Metabolism, and Health and Well-Being provides students with a broad range of research opportunities consistent with their main interests.
Furthermore, the programme provides students with the opportunity to develop fundamental practical skills. Graduates of this programme will have a good understanding of the key methods and equipment used for the assessment of exercise-induced changes in the key body systems. Liverpool Hope University is currently investing around £13.5M in building a new multipurpose science facility including state-of-the-art labs for biomechanics, exercise physiology and performance, sport psychology, nutrition and biology, followed by modernising and expanding the existing sport facilities. These developments will be completed by December 2015, providing students with an excellent environment for skill development, independent learning, and research.
Entry to the award normally requires at least a 2:1 in a relevant discipline such as Sports Science, Sport Psychology, Sport and Physical Education, Biology/Human Biology, Health Sciences, Nutrition, Physiological Sciences, and other related fields. Students with a 2:2 in these subjects may also be given consideration on an individual basis. Due to the diverse nature of this subject area, suitably qualified candidates (with degrees in non-relevant disciplines) but with applied backgrounds (e.g. professional sports coaches, occupational therapists, physiotherapists) are also encouraged to apply, and will be given consideration on an individual basis.
