Course Description

The Master’s Programme in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences is a research-oriented programme which covers almost the entire area of drug research. The programme offers seven specialisations, three of which correspond to major research themes in the Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences: Drug & Target Discovery, BioTherapeutics and Systems Pharmacology.

Admission to the Master’s in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences is possible throughout the year. International students who need a visa or housing are advised to start the programme in February or September.

Course detail

Leiden University has a rich tradition in pharmaceutical sciences. During the last 30 years, there has been a clear change in focus from traditional (bio-)pharmaceutical teaching to a more research-oriented training in bio-pharmaceutical sciences. This research orientation in the teaching programme is unique in Europe and enjoys a highly international profile.

The Master’s programme is designed and organised by the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) at Leiden University. The LACDR is a leading institute dedicated to world-class research and education in drug design, discovery and development. The LACDR operates in close collaboration with the Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR) and the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). The mission of the institute is to advance the discovery of future medicines through cutting-edge research and training of bio-pharmaceutical scientists.

Orange Tulip Scholarship - 2 Awards

Leiden University (in cooperation with Nuffic Neso China) offers 2 scholarships which each cover the full tuition fee of the student. It is possible to submit applications for more scholarship programmes simultaneously. However, it is not possible to obtain more than 1 scholarship from Leiden University for the same study programme.Which programmes? The scholarships are valid for Master’s programmes at Leiden University (taught in English) starting in September 2016, but it is likely this scholarship will also be available in 2017.Please be aware that you will have to apply to both Leiden University and Nuffic Neso-China to be eligible for this scholarship.Students should be aware that this is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely. One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €12,000 to €15,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Scholarship AmountThe Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has three awards: € 10.000 of the tuition fee € 15.000 of the tuition fee Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department. The type of award has no reflection on the students' academic level of excellence. Please be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship.

A bachelor’s degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor’s degree, or demonstrate to meet the requirements for such a degree.
