MSc ICT in Business

Course Description

Rapid changes in information and communication technology and its applications over recent years have caused major changes for individuals, organisations and industries. The internet, and information systems and communication technology in general, have radically impacted our personal and professional lives. New business models have emerged, as well as new types of entrepreneurship and new forms of leadership.

This two-year programme aims at providing a deeper understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities in this area, with a specific focus on the alignment of ICT and management. The programme combines the knowledge and expertise of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) with those of professionals from the field.

Course detail

The ICT in Business programme consists of around 20 courses and a 38ects thesis project. The master’s thesis research project is not necessarily but often based on an in-company project.

The courses cover business fundamentals, core ICT & Business topics, research related courses and electives:

Business Fundamentals
A set of courses that will bring students onto a basic level of business understanding. Examples: Marketing, Finance and Managing People.

Core courses: ICT in Complex Organisations
Advanced courses that focus on the interrelationship between organizational processes, management and ICT. Examples: ICT Architectures, Strategy and Software Engineering.

Research Courses
Courses to develop research skills, necessary for your master thesis research project. This project is not necessarily, but often based on an in-company project in a complex organization like a Governmental Institution, a multinational or a bank. Duration: 6 months.

Electives
The electives allow you to individualize your programme and accommodate special interests. Examples: ICT in the Public sector, legal aspects of ICT and Data Driven Marketing. Taking electives abroad is encouraged.

The programme schedule is intense, allowing participants to complete the programme (regular course load: two academic years) in around 22 months of full-time study.

Christos Siskos

4843.jpg My name is Christos Siskos. I come from Thessaloniki, city in the North of Greece. I chose the master of ICT in Business because it provides an extended focus on the business understanding by investigating the effective alignment between organizational processes, management and Information Technology. I have experienced a very tough and intensive schedule consisting of many lectures, practical assignments and a research Thesis. The main target of the program is to prepare graduates who are able to play a special role in teams, speaking the business language and in the same time translating all requirements into technical specifications. What I have been taught as a person is the continuous team work with completely different cultural backgrounds, mindsets and values, an extremely important skill for achieving progress in complex projects. Furthermore, I have learned to challenge myself and motivate others to act likewise. Over the time I have been proud to meet many professors with a high academic reputation that were able to offer a connection to an expanded professional network for my Thesis research and support me in my journey until my graduation. The program has an excellent reputation in the IT market and I can provide my absolute confirmation for it. Today, after hard work, focus and having this master degree as my asset, I am a Business Intelligence Analyst at Philips located in Netherlands.

Xin Qi

4848.jpg I’m Xin from China. After obtaining my bachelor's degree in Beijing, I along with four other classmates were selected for the Master programme ICT in Business in Leiden University. The programme is a full-time study that contains two parts: 3 semesters lectures and 1 semester master project. During the first 3 semesters, the programme offers a wide range of courses from business to technology; and during the last semester, students are encouraged to pick up a field they are really into for a master project (thesis). Apart from the regular curricula, students often have opportunities to visit companies from start-ups to market-leaders as well as participate in business events. Overall, the ICTiB class is full of diversity, so it is also great fun to learn from each other!

Before I came to Europe, Leiden appeared to me as a mystery because of her age. However, from the moment I got off the Sprinter from Schiphol to Leiden, I was attracted more and more by the city. Leiden is lovely, for the poem walls in every corner, the cute Dutch houses with little kittens, our Professor Bear traveling around the world, and the Saturday market with the smell of haring and kibbeling; Leiden is also vigorous, for international students at the bar Einstein, people celebrating Koningsdag on their boats, the fantastic parade on October 3rd, and the open bridge for Sinterklass and Zwarte Pieten… . But most importantly, I would like to thank OWL, where I become acquainted with my best Dutch and other international friends – without their company, I cannot imagine me witnessing the most amazing Dutchie life.
