Discourse Studies


Course Description

This MA is an innovative programme specifically designed to give you the competence to undertake empirical work in discourse studies by drawing on both linguistic and social theory. The MA enables you to explore discourse in areas such as politics, law, business, media and health, whilst developing skills in a range of analytical methods. Support for your studies is provided by the non-credit Postgraduate Academic Study Skills module which runs in terms 1, 2 and 3.

Geoffrey Leech Scholarships - 2 Awards

These scholarships for MA study were set up by the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster to mark the retirement of Professor Geoffrey Leech. Geoff Leech is one of our most eminent and long-serving colleagues, and internationally renowned for his pioneering work in modern English grammar, stylistics, and corpus linguistics. As co-author of the Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language and the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English, he is one of the foremost authorities on the English language. The scholarships are for study on any of the MA programmes listed above.Award criteria: The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates for a scholarship will be ranked based on the following criteria:Academic ability (as evidenced by academic record and references)
Suitability for the programme applied for
Commitment to scholarship in the relevant field(s)
Potential for contribution to scholarship and society more generally
Financial need.

Value of Scholarship(s)

Tuition fee covered at UK/EU rate

Eligibility

The Geoffrey Leech Scholarships are open to UK, EU and Overseas applicants. Two scholarships will be awarded each year. The value of each award will be equivalent to the UK/EU tuition fees, but non-UK/EU students may also apply.

Application Procedure

After you have applied for one of our Lancaster-based MA programmes and have accepted an offer of a place, you will need to write a formal request to be considered for the scholarship. This should be no more than 500 words and make a case for receiving the award with reference to the criteria listed above (and any others which you feel are relevant). Please include enough detail about your financial situation to allow the Department to assess your need.
