MA Dance Performance (Transitions Dance Company)

Course Description

A double achievement: the rigorous challenges of a real life dance company and the demands of an MA. Become the best dancer you can be and develop the advanced skills you need to work in today's professional arts environment. Trinity Laban's Transitions was the world's first graduate dance company and it has since acquired an outstanding reputation for technical excellence and originality; it offers you a bridge to the professional world while you study for a highly respected Masters. Your critical reflections and dissertation are embedded within the programme so that you achieve your MA within 13 months.

Please note: the MA Dance Performance is embedded within the Transitions Dance Company experience. You will need to be accepted into the company as a pre-requisite to applying for this programme.

Programme Information

Transitions Dance Company has gained an international reputation for the technical excellence of its dancers and the originality of the work it performs. This programme will give you the opportunity to work with outstanding international choreographers, culminating in an international tour. In the past, choreographers have included Rui Horta, Liz Aggis, Della Davidson, Yolande Snaith, Lea Anderson, Mark Murphy, Jamie Watton, Jasmin Vardimon and Jan De Schynkel.

As a member of Transitions Dance Company, you will work within a professional company environment, taking daily advanced level classes in both contemporary dance and classical ballet. These will be supported by classes in fitness and somatic techniques. You will work with professional performers and dance educators, rehearse repertory pieces, and actively engage with professional choreographers in the creation of new works. The company tours nationally and internationally, giving you a professional performance experience in a diverse and challenging repertory.

Programme Content

This challenging experience will help you grow into a performer who will contribute effectively and creatively to the profession, not only as a practitioner but as an articulate advocate for performance and performance practice. By advancing your skills, you'll have the opportunity to formulate a deeper understanding of the technical and artistic complexities inherent in performance. You'll be encouraged to critically reflect on your development in the studio and in wider theoretical contexts.

The taught element comprises the following modules:

M-502 Research Methods
M-521 Advanced Technical Practice
M-522 The Performer in the Creative Process
M-523 Dance Performance
M-505 Project

The Project (M505), which you undertake following your time with Transitions, may take the form of a lecture-demonstration, a written dissertation, or a practice-based project with supporting documentation.

See the Programme Specification on our website for further details.

Progression Routes

Transitions is constantly evolving to reflect changes in the dance scene, ensuring alumni are quickly employed. Recent MAP graduates have performed with Lost Dog, Michael Clark Company, Ballet Boyz, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre amongst others, as well as making and performing in their own work.

Verity Quade, Vocalist

1196.png Trinity Laban was one of the most positive experiences of my life both socially and vocationally. If I had my time again, I still wouldn’t choose to go anywhere else. The teachers are the leading exponents in their fields, which is invaluable. To be taught by people that still actively do what they are teaching is inspirational.

Dylan Crossman

1202.png Being a student at Trinity Laban taught me how to learn. From teachers, from fellow dancers, from all the different situations, challenges and experiences that were presented to me. I experienced hard work, compassion, creatice processes, being on stage. It created a network of amazing dance artists. I learned how to analyse movement, articulate it both physically and theoretically. I worked with a lot of established, up and coming as well as emerging choreographers. To this day, the clarity in my own body and in space comes from the Laban Movement Analysis. Trinity Laban gave me the freedom to figure out who I was and who I wanted to become as a performer and it taught me that being me is good. I still strive to be myself honestly, on stage, to this day.

Nicola Conibere

1203.png The explorations I began through the MA programme enabled me to discover a way of working that integrates my theoretical and practical interests in performance, and remains the foundation for the work I make today. This was the result of study which not only nurtured tireless interrogation of both theoretical discourse on performance and the practical issues of making it, but, importantly, suggested that each area is equally capable of enlightening the other.

Luca Silvestrini

1204.png I will always look back at my time at [Trinity] Laban as one of the most significant turning points of my life. The teachers, choreographers and fellow students I came into contact with have all played a considerable role in the development of my passion for dance and choreography into a successful career.

(Student Profile)

Rosalie Wahlfrid

1205.png Trinity Laban has offered me three very different years of training and guidance. I have been provided with a base of great knowledge and understanding of my body and mind, my own responsibility as a student and investigation into what my interests are, both as performer and dance maker. This has been essential for entering a professional environment. I have had the opportunity to work with great artists that have nurtured and inspired me to continue my journey in the profession. I have experienced freedom and been given the space to start research of my own practice whilst working alongside other dance artists.
