Master of Biomedical Science


Course Description

Introduction
The Master of Biomedical Science, with specialised professional streams in Medical Laboratory Science, is designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary for employment in medical pathology laboratories or other diagnostic laboratories and to gain research experience in an area of speciality. The programme will provide a formal qualification in Biomedical Science for students with an undergraduate background in science or health science. The programme will equip students to sit the examination for membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists when they have the appropriate professional practical laboratory experience.
The Master of Biomedical Science will also provide a pathway for students to enter postgraduate research degrees.

Objectives
The Master of Biomedical Science is designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary for employment as Medical Laboratory Scientists in medical pathology laboratories (after appropriate laboratory experience) or other diagnostic laboratories and to provide relevant research experience. The programme will provide a formal qualification in Biomedical Science for students with an undergraduate background in science or health science. The programme will equip students to sit the examination for membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) when they have the appropriate practical laboratory experience.
The Master of Biomedical Science will provide some experience in research and a potential pathway for students to enter postgraduate research degrees.

Career Outcomes
Students will gain knowledge and a variety of skills in Medical Laboratory Science professional areas such as: clinical chemistry, endocrinology, haematology, blood transfusion science, histopathology, medical microbiology, human molecular biology, and immunology. A Medical Scientist carries out laboratory investigations which assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Graduates of the course should be eligible to sit the examination for membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists once they have completed appropriate practical laboratory experience.
There are various career options open to biomedical and medical laboratory scientists, especially in hospital clinical and pathology laboratories, private pathology services, blood transfusion services, veterinary pathology laboratories and public health laboratories. Other areas of employment are found in universities and diagnostic companies.
Some students will be prepared to undertake further postgraduate training in biomedical research, leading to potential career options in research organisations.

Professional Recognition
Graduates will be eligible to join the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) as Intermediate Members and once they have completed 2 years relevant work experience will be eligible to sit the AIMS Professional Membership Examination to become full Professional Members.

English Language Requirements
International applicants will be required to provide evidence of their English language ability.
For those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided.
Alternatively, applicants can provide evidence that English has been the sole medium of instruction and examination in their most recent studies, for a minimum of 2 years, and within the last 24 months. Academic transcripts and a letter from your institution will be required.

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of a first degree in Biochemistry or a Medical Science, Health Science, Science or other related discipline, with a credit average, including studies of Biochemistry/Physiology at second year and some first or second year Immunology and Microbiology^ (^ Students may have undertaken Immunology or Microbiology in an undergraduate degree program at either first or second year, depending on the nature of the program.)
