Masters in Information Visualisation using Augmented reality


Course Description

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that allows virtual objects to be overlaid on a real world setting. A typical example is using a mobile phone camera to view a street scene and identify restaurants, shops etc. As one moves around the display is updated. Many examples can be found on youtube. Information visualisation uses graphical techniques to summarise and aggregate information to deliver meaningful content to the user. It has application in many fields including business, marketing, medicine, industry etc. As mobile phones get more powerful and merge with tablet like devices such as the iPad there are increasing possibilities for the visualisation of data on these devices.

This project will investigate

• Investigate and evaluate which AR technologies are suitable for implementing ‘markerless’ visualisation on mobile/tablet devices
• Investigate – for a particular application yet to be selected – which visualisation metaphors are most suitable
• Design and implement a system to visualise information in an interactive manner
• Evaluate the resulting implementation from a performance and usability point of view.

Entry Requirements

From an Honours Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or Relevant Engineering Degrees, Applicants must have good C/C++ programming skills. Experience with image processing/graphics/AR packages such as OpenCV, OpenGL or ARToolKit would be a definite plus.
