Terahertz Security Imaging (Masters by Research). ITTDublin, Dublin, Ireland

Course Description

Terahertz Security Imaging (Masters by Research). ITTDublin, Dublin, Ireland

The Institute of Technology Tallaght, Department of Computing, Dublin (www.it-tallaght.ie/computing) is pleased to announce a funded M.Sc. Computing degree (by research) available in Dublin starting September or October 2008. The research, over two years, will be in the area of Terahertz Security imaging.

Terahertz imaging systems have the potential to improve security standards in applications such as the identification of concealed dangerous objects (i.e. in the postal service or at airports). Currently the state of the art systems are single pixel imagers which raster scan over an object to build up a picture. This is inefficient and time-consuming so this research proposes an alternative optical technique utilising computerised recognition programmes at the heart of a terahertz optical system.

The proposed research project will develop efficient algorithms to identify objects based on the analysis of its Fourier transform. This computational technique allows objects to be identified accurately by incorporating advanced image processing of the Terahertz radiation. Experimental verification will be completed using laboratory facilities at NUI Maynooth.

Candidates should have an honours B.Sc. in Computing / Computer Science (or equivalent). A competitive stipend, with funding for equipment and travel is also offered.

Interested candidates may contact Dr. David White ([email protected]), for an informal discussion, or alternatively, send full and up-to-date CVs with details of recent project work (and work experience) to the above email address.
