Course Description

Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics

Master’s Degree Programme in Bioinformatics offers you in-depth knowledge about relationships of biology and computational science, provides you skills you can utilize as bioinformatician, biostatistician or biological data analyst, qualifies you to work in industry or continue your studies at doctoral level in academia. It is an accredited two-year full-time Master of Science programme comprising of 120 ECTS. The language of instruction is English.

The Programme addresses those who want to have a Master’s level specialization in the rapidly developing field of bioinformatics. All of our students are involved in the research work of one of the 25 research groups at the Institute of Biomedical Technology. Research topics available for the young scientists range from cancer research, mitochondrial genetics and molecular immunology to structural bioinformatics and computational immunology. Many of our students experience involvement in high-quality research as decisive in their career, a merit which can be utilized later either in industry or academia.

Starting from BSc level, the students are expected to complete their MSc in two years. Teaching starts in August/September every year.

Required skills

We assume a knowledge of high school mathematics (including logarithms, calculus, probability calculations and analytical geometry) and basic chemistry (including basic organic chemistry) and university-level knowledge either in biochemistry and molecular biology or computer science. We will organize initial level examinations in these topics to determine the need of courses to be taken by each student. Up to 9 credits of such elementary courses can be included in the minimal 120-credit degree, but anything above that will be required as complementing studies.

Complementing studies

Complementing studies, which are taken in addition to the minimum of 120 credits in the degree, may be required depending on the extent of student's relevant previous studies. Some complementing studies may be assigned by initial level tests, or in case of students with a degree from a polytechnic or other non-university institute, they will be assigned individually when making the personal study plans.


There are no tuition fees in the programme, but the costs of living have to be taken by the students themselves. We have no grants available to support our students. For students who come from outside the European Union, one of the requirements for obtaining a permit of residence is a deposit of approximately 6000 € per year (level in 2011) in a Finnish bank, which can be used for living after you have arrived in Finland.

Participating institutes

The education will be interdisciplinary and jointly managed by the Institute of Biomedical Technology in the University of Tampere, and the Department of Information Technology in the University of Turku. Each university will accept fifteen students per year to start in the programme.

The curriculum in Bioinformatics is identical in both universities, and the courses are arranged jointly so you take the same courses and same exams whether you study in Turku or Tampere. There are only minor differences in language studies and in the availability of optional studies, and of course the city in which you live and study is different.

A first degree (B.Sc.) in one of the following: Molecular biology related field or Information science. A suitable proof of proficiency in English.
