Awarded through the University of Northampton, this course equips students with necessary tools to become a Sports Therapist, including a range of practical, patient handling and clinical decision-making skills. Teaching takes place in world-class facilities at Moulton College that include purpose-built clinical teaching rooms, strength and conditioning suite, 25-metre pool, environmental chamber, whole-body cryotherapy chambers, aquatic therapy facilities, and physiology and biomechanics laboratories. Achievement of the MSc requires completion of 180 credits from compulsory and elective modules that include:
• Injury Assessment and Management - You will study a range of issues relating to injury epidemiology and prevention, will develop your subjective and objective assessment skills, and evaluate technique in injury management including electrotherapy modalities. • Manual Therapies 1 & 2 - You will develop theoretical and practical knowledge of Maitland, Cyriax and Mulligan manual therapy techniques, for peripheral and spinal injuries. • Research Methods/Dissertation - Through a combination of lecture based learning and independent study, you will study a range of qualitative and quantitative methods in order to design and conduct an independent research thesis. • Integrated Clinical and Professional Practice - You will develop your knowledge of legal and ethical issues surrounding therapeutic treatments, and integrate clinical skills to formulate appropriate clinical management plans. • Advanced Clinical Reasoning and Rehabilitation - You will consider pathoneurodynamics in injury, develop advanced skills in rehabilitation programming and exercise prescription, and implement advanced reasoning skills in clinical decision making. • Strength and Conditioning - You will develop practical skills in prescribing and coaching a range of strength and conditioning exercises for the prevention and rehabilitation of injury. • Clinical Placement - Through 100 hours of supervised practical experience in a clinical setting of your choice, you will implement your practical skills and develop skills in reflective practice. We have strong relationships with a number of professional teams that include Northampton Saints Rugby Club, MK Dons Football Club, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northampton Town Football Club, Coventry Blades Ice Hockey Club.
Lower second-class honours degree or better in a relevant discipline (sports science, sports performance and coaching, fitness) but applicants from other disciplines may be admitted where they can demonstrate a strong anatomy and physiology knowledge and a willingness and ability to tackle the course. The course is also suitable for applicants with a degree in sports therapy wishing to further advance their knowledge to level 7. Applicants must demonstrate a sufficient command of the English language; international applicants must demonstrate an equivalent entry qualification and have an IELTS score of at least 6.5. All applicants will be interviewed.
