The programme develops trainees' school experiences in order to explore some of the wider concerns of Chemistry and Science teachers today, and provides opportunities to broaden professional experiences. There are sessions that are particularly important for Chemistry teachers: teaching the concept of acids and pH, elements, mixtures and compounds and exothermic and endothermic reactions.

An effective Chemistry teacher must also develop his/her pedagogical subject knowledge specifically related to teaching Chemistry: for example, the effective use of practical work in Chemistry, the teaching and learning of key Chemistry ideas, and the teaching and learning of Chemistry beyond the classroom. Sessions are provided that focus on these areas for Chemists as well as other sessions in the other two Sciences. Subject knowledge is provided via a peer teaching programme.

Our secondary PGCE programmes prepare trainees to teach across the 11-16 age range. As part of the Post-16 Enhancement we offer trainees a range of experiences to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills for teaching at Post 16.

Course aims

The primary aim of the course is to enable trainees to meet the Teachers Standards and be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) . The course also aims to encourage trainees to examine, in a critical but constructive way, the current educational system and practice.

Course Content

The MSc is a one year full time course consisting of taught material and a substantial research project. Teaching is delivered by academic experts within the Department of Chemistry as well as external experts from other academic institutions and industry. The Teaching component of the course is delivered via a mix of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical work. You will learn about the key principles of green chemistry and the importance of sustainable technology in a variety of areas. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills.

Assessment methods include a closed examination, written assignments, presentations, posters and practical work.

Our Students

The MSc course has been running for over ten years over which time there has been a large increase in the range of nationalities represented. The content of the course is globally relevant and so attracts applications from around the world from people keen to develop their own knowledge to pass on when they return to their home country. Research Project

A key part of the MSc in Green Chemistry is the research project. The whole course is 180 credits and the research project accounts for 100 of these so is a very significant part of the programme.

Students are able to choose from a range of project areas in order to carry out research in their area of interest. Projects will be supervised by an academic member of staff, and may also involve collaboration with industry. Projects are chosen in the early stages of the course and you will be allocated to a PAG - Project Area Group - that corresponds with larger research projects that are currently taking place within the Green Chemistry Centre.

Projects can vary each year, but examples of recent MSc students' research includes:
-Production of natural flavours and fragrances using biocatalysis in scCO2
-Clean synthetic strategies for production of pharmaceuticals
-Extraction and utilisation of high value chemicals from food waste

Applicants for School Direct apply via UCAS Teacher Training. Under UCAS Apply 1, you select three courses to apply for concurrently. These can be a mixture of all routes in to teaching.

The Course

Trainee teachers selected for The Pathfinder School Direct route, will be placed in two secondary schools within The Pathfinder Alliance. They will engage in a range of School Direct learning events hosted by The Pathfinder lead school Archbishop Holgate's school. On successful completion of the course, School Direct trainees will be awarded a University of York PGCE at Masters Level, and recommended for QTS.

School Direct trainees work with trainees on the University of York PGCE route in both the Whole School Issues sessions and Curriculum Area sessions at university.

Assessment

School Direct trainees and University of York trainees all complete three Masters level assignments (60 credits), that focus on their developing practice, academic engagement with educational research and their training in both schools and university.

School Direct trainees must meet all of the Teachers' Standards, engage in all University and school training sessions, complete three school placements, the Professional Enrichment project and the 3 Masters level assignments.

A wealth of extra curricular and professional training opportunities will be offered to School Direct trainees by The Pathfinder Alliance.

The Department of Education offers a one-year (12 month) taught full time MA in Science Education. This programme will be attractive to all those who have an interest in science education, whether as teachers, researchers or policy makers. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students.

Applicants are strongly advised to ensure that they submit applications no later than 1st September if they wish to begin a course of study beginning in the same year. No guarantee can be offered that applications received after this date will be processed for a September start date.

The Department also welcomes applications from people interested in studying for a PhD in science education in its areas of expertise (see below).

Areas of expertise include assessment, attitudes to science, the use of context-based approaches to the teaching of science, curriculum development (including international collaboration on projects), evaluation of curriculum interventions, gender issues in science education, practical work in science, scientific literacy, systematic reviews of research literature, and the transition from primary to secondary school. Current international work includes involvement in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) project and a number of initiatives in Southern Africa.

Students will also be able to attend the department series of research seminars for Masters students which includes talks by visiting speakers.

Assessment

Students will complete:
-Four assessed coursework essay assignments (each 4,000 to 5,000 words in length)
-An exam in Research Methods in Education
-An assessed presentation + dissertation outline + ethics audit
-A dissertation of 12,000 words in length

Careers

Our graduates find employment in a wide range of sectors within education, but also in journalism, information management, human resources and other careers.

Our postgraduate courses can be used to complement teacher training/development programmes and voluntary or paid roles which focus on the more practical elements of teaching. However, other than our PGCE, our courses are not teacher training programmes in themselves.
