The Department of Urban Planning and Design is a dynamic and international department that combines the best of urban planning and design theory and practice, with the specifics of practice in the rapidly urbanising Chinese environment. Because of XJTLU’s unique location, students learn in one of the world’s most fascinating urban planning classrooms, China.
Students studying urban planning and design develop understanding of the processes of spatial change in the built and natural environments and engage the arguments for intervening in these processes. Students develop the knowledge and skills to analyse, critique and, ultimately, contribute to the sustainability of urban and rural development both in China and around the world.
As the size of the human population increases, cities now need to respond to a range of complex urban phenomena including rapid expansion and urban shrinkage. These complex issues demand more sophisticated solutions in order to achieve sustainable development.
Our connections to the Departments of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Electrical Engineering, and International Business School Suzhou, among others, help to foster the interdisciplinary enquiry essential for good urban planning and design.
ACADEMIC STAFF
Our international and interdisciplinary mix of academic staff, and their wide range of professional and academic experience, makes for a lively intellectual atmosphere that nourishes staff and students alike. We encourage students to join our community and enter into the debate about how to make our cities better.
