Computer systems affect every part of our daily lives as they are used by every conceivable type of organisation. These systems are highly interdisciplinary with historical roots in mathematics, physics and electronics. Over the years, computer scientists and software engineers remain at the cutting edge by creating more intelligent and effective solutions to problems.

The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering equips its students with a broad knowledge of computer-based systems and the technical skills to work in research, development or technical support. Students learn how to use skills creatively to solve practical problems and how cutting-edge computer technology is developed.

Our highly qualified staff members have a diverse range of international experience in teaching, research and working with industry, which, together with our active research and business interactions, benefit our students in enhancing their learning experience and employability.

INDUSTRIAL LINKS

Along with research, we are active in business engagement and have worked with industry on practical projects, contributing to the community and bringing hands-on experience to our staff and students. We are located in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), where a large cluster of world top 500 companies have their branches, research and development centres or production facilities. As the only academic department at XJTLU working on computer science, software engineering, new media and web applications, we work with industrial organisations in a variety of ways from curriculum development and specialist training to student placements and special projects. We have established links with a number of companies in SIP including Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, Lego and NCS.

We engage students in research and industry-related work and, under the supervision of staff, our students have published their research outcomes.

RESEARCH

Our research aims to develop leading-edge solutions to real-world problems by investigating rigorous theory and applied approaches. Our staff members are highly recognised for their world-quality research.

Staff have a large number of research publications in top international journals including those sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Many of our staff members are editors and reviewers of a wide range of academic journals and conferences. The department has a record of successfully attracting funding from various local, provincial, national, and international sources such as the European Union and National Natural Science Foundation of China, and we have collaborators in China as well as across Asia, Europe and North America.

Your final postgraduate thesis topic will reflect the department’s research interests and you will have the opportunity of to continue projects in the form of a PhD.

OUR CURRENT EXPERTISE INCLUDES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEMS, BIG DATA ANALYTICS, SOCIAL COMPUTING, ENTERPRISE COMPUTING, FINANCIAL COMPUTING, ENERGY HARVESTING, HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION, IMAGE PROCESSING AND COMPUTER VISION, NETWORKING, OPERATING SYSTEMS AND ROBOTICS.
