Our programmes are designed to produce engineers with sound knowledge, problem-solving skills and comprehensive understanding of the multidisciplinary aspects of building design that combines the precision of civil, structural and building services engineering principles as well as the creativity of architecture.

China is witnessing rapid economic transformation alongside unprecedented urbanisation and civil engineering students will be able to take full advantage of China’s evolution. Our department educates technical professionals with an international outlook that can meet the industrial development requirements of the next century. You will be immersed in both the theory and practice of design and construction. Professors, lecturers and industry professionals from the department provide you with a well-rounded education and in-depth learning of the multidisciplinary interdependence and complexity involved with architectural engineering, from the design phase to construction.

THE DEPARTMENT IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH A STATE-OF-THE-ART ENVIRONMENTAL LAB INCLUDING: ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS, GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY/MASS SPECTROMETRY, THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS, PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS, BET SPECIFIC AREA AND FIBRE EXTRACTION UNITS.

DIVERSE RESEARCH

Our research is diverse and covers modern engineering construction and energy production methods. We particularly encourage active learning in the delivery of our programmes.

Our research covers:

• Material and structural behaviour of fibre-reinforced cementitious composites

• Usage of GGBS (ground-granulated blast-furnace slag) as a cement replacement in concrete

• construction with timber

• Strengthening and rehabilitation of statically deficient structures

• Advanced structural modelling

• Sustainable infrastructure, building information modelling (BIM) and construction simulation

• Groundwater contamination and biochemical decomposition of biomass

• Renewable energy and biofuels

• Modelling of nanostructured materials for energy applications

Your final thesis topic will reflect the department’s research interests and you will have the opportunity to continue projects in the form of a PhD.

FACILITIES

We are fortunate to have world-class laboratory teaching facilities. These include an extensive structures laboratory, structural testing frames for a range of scales, an earthquake shaking table laboratory facility, a geotechnics centrifuge laboratory facility, hydraulics laboratories for water and air flow, extensive soil mechanics laboratory facilities, three universal testing machines, a range of concrete mixing facilities, comprehensive highway materials laboratories, a timber processing lab, wastewater treatment benches, advanced structural simulation software (ANSYS), and building information modelling software (Autodesk Revit).

The department is also equipped with a state-of-the-art chemical analysis lab including elemental analysis, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, particle size analysis, BET specific area and fibre extraction units.

INDUSTRIAL LINKS

We are connected with a number of enterprises such as the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG), with over 400 companies under its group, as well as international companies such as ARUP UK. The possibility of summer internships for students, which could lead to future employment, is greatly enhanced because of these relationships.
