The course

The PgC in Agricultural Law provides a firm basis for specialism for rural professionals such as chartered surveyors, solicitors, accountants and rural business consultants, whether as an introduction or as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for those with experience. The modules earn CPD points for solicitors and other professionals.

Module options include those providing the necessary legal foundations for practice and covering the all-important areas of land law, agricultural, commercial and residential tenancies, the UK planning system and taxation computation and planning. The options choices enable you to tailor the programme to your own requirements.

How will it benefit me?

Completion of a PgC in Agricultural Law will give students a valuable specialism allowing them to more closely understand and address clients’ needs in the rural environment. The specialist options in Planning, Taxation and Land Law are underpinned by the development of post-graduate level study skills and a more general introduction to law in the Machinery of Government module. The course will aid students' effectiveness in the workplace, or in further studies, in developing their skills in accessing and preparing legal materials and in solving legal problems.

Drawing on the expertise of law staff within the School, the course keeps up-to-date with the latest requirements from the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (“SRA”), providing you with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the field. The course is approved by the Joint Academic Stage Board (“JASB”), on behalf of the SRA and Bar Standards Board (“BSB”).

The CPE is taught over one year full-time or two years part-time, in which case attendance usually involves two evenings per week. You will experience a variety of teaching methods including framework lectures, group-led discussions and debates, workshops, oral presentations and independent research. Assessment will be through examinations in January and June.

Throughout your time spent studying for the LLM [Common Professional Examination] course, you will undertake lectures, seminars, workshops, use on-line learning facilities and other forms of technology-supported learning to gain knowledge of the legal system, familiarity with its institutions and procedures understand the principles and values in a range of topics extending beyond the core subject areas and have in-depth knowledge of chosen specialist areas.

You should be able to apply knowledge to problem situations and demonstrate the ability to provide solutions; be able to evaluate law both independently and in relation to other perspectives.

Through learned research techniques you will be able to identify and use primary legal sources and journals relevant to topics under study and be able to act independently in planning and managing tasks and demonstrate proficiency in the use of ICT and technology supported learning.

The LLM Legal Practice Course learning outcomes aim to: prepare students for work-based learning; provide a general foundation for practice; and demonstrate academic legal research skills and enhanced knowledge through independent study and production of a Masters level dissertation.

The course is delivered through a mixture of large group sessions (where the whole student cohort is taught together), small group sessions (typically comprising 15-20 students), online video presentations and exercises, in-class role-playing and directed independent study.

The LPC is designed to give students a strong foundation for general legal practice. Therefore, equal weight is given to the core practice areas of Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice and Litigation.

Vocational Electives are provided at Stage 2 of the course. The choice of electives offered provides a balance between 'High Street' private client and “Commercial” areas of practice.

The course can be studied full-time in the day or part-time day or evening basis (with occasional Saturday attendance) to meet students’ individual needs.

Students are provided with textbooks and practice-based materials for each element of the course.

LPC students have a specially designated resources room with access to practitioner texts and reference materials. You will also have access to on-line practitioner reference materials and resources, such as precedents, statutes and legal databases.

Students are supported in their search for employment with a dedicated Careers Tutor and a number of initiatives throughout the academic year. We have strong links with both local and national firms and are engaged with the local legal community. LPC students will have the opportunity to participate in Mentoring Schemes, to attend the University’s Law Careers Fair and to attend practitioner presentations and workshops.

You can apply and develop your legal knowledge and skills by volunteering as a student legal adviser in the University's acclaimed Legal Advice Centre, assisting members of the public with legal queries.

Our LPC has excellent academic staff and course teams who will make every effort to ensure that each student gets the support they need.

The addition of a Masters’ level dissertation will give students the opportunity to obtain a higher level, Masters’ degree, qualification and gain specialised knowledge and insight into an area of law relevant to their intended legal practice.
