On a national and international scale there is an increasing need to reconcile the need for increased food production with the need for conservation of natural resources. There is also a need for people to understand and deal with complex land situations such as within agricultural systems. This course is intended to provide students with a detailed understanding of basic and applied agro-ecology and the issues associated with, on the one hand, the increased and shifting needs for food production and on the other the need for conservation and management of natural resources. Sustainable food production and sustainable intensification are of high policy importance both nationally and internationally. Agro-ecology is a key aspect of sustainable intensification.

The course

This course builds on the Engineering Department’s long history of working closely with industry teaching students how to apply engineering science to industrial product design. Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary field of engineering that combines with mechanical, electronic, computer, software, control and systems design engineering in the design and manufacture of useful products. It is an increasingly important discipline as most modern vehicles and machinery incorporate multiple mechatronic systems.

Some of the technologies that mechatronics encompasses include: robotics, vision systems, satellite navigation systems, communications technology, and biometric and other new advanced sensors. Introduction of these new technologies means that engineers cannot rely upon prior knowledge when designing machinery. As a consequence it has become normal practice for new highly technical equipment to be developed by specialist manufacturers, either through subcontract subsystem devolution or commercial partnership.

When developing new products, much of the work of the engineer involves the recombination or reapplication of previously un-combined technologies to solve new problems or enable new functionalities. Engineers therefore need to develop the greatest possible body of knowledge as a resource to call upon during the resolution of novel challenges in new or different environments.

This postgraduate programme builds upon students’ existing engineering skills and knowledge developed through prior education and focuses them into a more specific and applied area of study. This approach is designed to allow students to expand their applied knowledge and develop the necessary powers of analysis required to solve complex design problems. Learning largely takes place through a series of individual and group engineering projects intended to enable students to apply their existing academic skills and knowledge to the design, fabrication and testing of new products or systems. Where applicable, projects will be sponsored and supported by engineering companies and will focus on the development of mechatronic systems, machinery and equipment.

The aquaculture programme reflects the expansion of a modern industry that now supplies nearly 50 per cent of our annual world sea food production and is valued at $110US Billion per annum globally. The production of fin-fish and shrimp and bivalves is now recognised as one of the fastest growing sectors of agri-business and contributes greatly to our food security agenda. Among the most important fish species are salmon and trout in temperate regions as well as numerous warm water species such as tilapia and catfish. Carp and other freshwater fish still make up the bulk of fish production with Asia and China dominating in this respect. Marine fish farming of sea bass, sea bream and exotic species such as barramundi and grouper are also at the fore- front of aquaculture development. The programme will cover the major fish species produced globally and different type of systems in use.

Aquaculture relies on high quality feeds, good nutrition and various management strategies that promote optimum health and welfare of fish. Consequently a full understanding of nutritional requirements, feed formulation and feed technology is paramount to its success. It also relies on knowledge of genetic improvements of fish stock, disease recognition, diagnostics and treatment. Good governance and compliance with legislation and standards in food safety and production is critical to the producer, retailer and consumer alike. These are all at the core of a sound and sustainable fish farming industry and central to the ethos of this course.

The programme will serve to offer a portfolio of multidisciplinary topics within a selection of specialised integrative modules to advance students’ understanding of the relevant biosciences underpinning fish farming. This will be presented within a theme of mono-gastric animal production where there are many similarities of principle and scientific approaches.

The course

Forests are the lungs of the world. The great boreal forests cover almost 17 million square kilometers of North America, Europe and Asia. Tropical forests cover perhaps 6.5 million square kilometers and temperate forest systems another 10 million square kilometers. Tropical forests are renowned as sources of biodiversity, the northern boreal forests are major regions of carbon sequestration and they too are under threat through timber and mineral exploitation. Without forests our climate would be drastically different from the one we experience today, much of the globe would be desert and uninhabitable. Yet despite their importance as sources of biodiversity and climate regulation they are, especially in the tropics and the far north, constantly under threat. In temperate regions commercially managed forests are important sources of much needed products for our homes and industry. They are also important refugia for threatened wild life and provide educational and recreational uses for a significant proportion of the population. Despite their importance we still know very little about how to manage them sustainably and how to protect our rapidly shrinking natural forests and woodlands and the organisms that live within them.

The course

Harper Adams is the UK’s only provider of postgraduate courses in entomology and related areas. There is currently a shortage of expertise in this important topic, which is a key element in the effort to ensure global food security and the understanding of biodiversity. By successfully completing this course you will develop a range of abilities that will prepare for an interesting and fulfilling career in an area with considerable opportunities.

Insects and allied invertebrates comprise approximately 78 per cent of the world’s macro-biodiversity, whereas vertebrates, even using the most generous estimates, make up less than three per cent. Insects and their relatives play an important role in all of our ecosystems. They range from beneficial insects such as pollinators and natural control agents to essential parts of the decomposition cycle such as dung and carrion insects. Many are also important pests of agriculture, horticulture and forestry, in addition to those that cause human health problems.

Many insects are also rare and endangered and need to be managed for conservation. Other insects are used as model organisms for evolutionary and genetic studies.

The aim of the course is to provide students with specialized training in entomology and conservation.

Selected by a European consortium of universities to be their UK partner institution Harper Adams offers a PgC in Agricultural Management for the Food Supply Industries to students enrolled on the European Masters in regional Food Production and Global Marketing and spending a proportion of their studies at Harper Adams. This PgC award forms part of the European MSc programme which is awarded and managed by ESA University in Angers, France. Based on extensive food industry experience across Europe and current industry contact, this course addresses many of the contemporary issues facing the European food industry. It is designed to meet the requirements of those wishing to join the food industry at management level with accelerated career progression.

Taught in both English and French over two years, this course develops in-depth knowledge of European local and regional food production, its economic and environmental impact and how these foods can be marketed to a global consumer. Students learn how to develop and market food products whose typical features are the result of various factors such as geographical origin, history and the culture of a country or region. Students will acquire scientific and technical knowledge to develop these food products as well as skills to promote and market them. The learning method builds upon close links between the teaching staff of partner universities and the food industry to design a course addressing the challenges of marketing local and regional products on a global scale.

How will it benefit me?

The course aims to develop student knowledge of food production through sustainable agriculture, sourcing, manufacturing and marketing across many different food product categories in relation to country specific considerations and the global market. In so doing it produces students with specialist knowledge who learn to apply this through industry case studies and a professional project. Students are placed in production companies, trading companies, consultancy firms, technical or research institutions, laboratories or certification bodies in the final semester. You will undertake practical application of a range of techniques to enable you to develop business management strategies within the evolving economic, social, legal and political framework that farm businesses operate in. The course

Agriculture is the dominant user of rural land, accounting for about 70% of the UK land area. There is increasing demand to find diverse means of using rural resources to ensure the continued viability of the rural economy. There is therefore need to further develop the skills in farm management and develop new business opportunities, be that farm diversification, value added enterprises, on-farm but non-farm activities or other rural developments to ensure that the future of the rural economy will be secured. This programme therefore aims to enhance the capacity of farm managers and those working in closely associated industries to perform within shifting economic and policy environments.

The course will focus on effective use of agricultural resources and the opportunities this presents to the rural economy. The course will seek to enable individuals to develop leadership skills while becoming more creative, flexible and innovative entrepreneurs with a high level of transferable skills. It will support students to identify opportunities offered by the changing economy. Teaching will be contexualised presentations of theory with direct practical consideration, utilising a practical knowledge base of the rural environment. By combining this with a sound understanding of business development and policy it will enable participants to maximise on opportunities identified.

The course is designed for existing owner-managers, directors and managers of farm-based businesses, and those who aspire to this level of career development. We expect participants, whilst not necessarily formally educated to undergraduate level, will be well informed and committed to the subject area. This course will provide the necessary focus for growth-orientated businesses to develop.
