What’s it like to study a masters in Winchester?

Winchester has a rich heritage, once the capital to the Saxon Kings of England such as Alfred the Great and King Arthur (who wasn’t really Saxon and is probably mythical, but that’s one for Literature and History postgraduates to puzzle over).

Now a small, friendly and relaxed city, the history of Winchester can still be seen in its ancient statues, monuments and architecture. This is typified by the famous Winchester Cathedral, featuring one of the longest naves of a medieval cathedral in Europe (you might recognise it from the front of a £10 note). The city also boasts the Great Hall, the remaining part of the King’s Castle which purportedly held King Arthur’s Round Table.

The city has a history of inspiring literature, too. Jane Austen died here and is buried at Winchester Cathedral, and the Jane Austen’s House Museum is still a popular attraction. The poet John Keats wrote some of his most famous works here too, including The Eve St. Agnes and To Autumn.

Winchester offers many independent bars, cafes and restaurants, with a reputation for exceptional food and drink. The city also borders the picturesque South Downs National Park: a quintessential English countryside with plenty of outdoor activities. Within 14 miles of Southampton, and an hour from London, there are busy cities nearby, too.

Established in 1840 by the Church of England, the University of Winchester is now home to nearly 8,000 students. This public research university offers study in a range of subjects and is situated a ten-minute walk away from the city centre.
