Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America, the seat of the US Government and the site of the United States Capitol (housing the US Congress) and the White House (the Presidential Residence). There are nineteen universities in Washington as well as a number of other higher education providers.
Washington was founded in 1791 and named for America's first president, George Washington. It was designed from the outset as a purpose-built capital and has gone on to be decorated with many national monuments and memorials celebrating the ideals, achievements and famous leaders of the American nation. As well as famous political sites such as the White House or the Lincoln Memorial, Washington is also home to various branches of the Smithsonian Institution of national museums and research centers as well as the US National Archives, in which the original Declaration of Independence is housed.
Whilst studying a Masters in Washington, D.C. you'll live in one of the world's most famous cities, surrounded by monuments and heritage sites celebrating seminal moments in the history and progress of western politics and philosophy.
As well as its famous tourist attractions, Washington boasts a vibrant nightlife, with famous venues associated with musical genres as diverse as jazz and hardcore punk rock. As befits its national and political prominence, the city also features some of America's most important media outlets and is home to several successful sports teams.
The oldest universities in Washington are Georgetown University, a private Jesuit and Catholic institution originally founded in 1789 and George Washington University, which was founded in 1821 and is the city's largest research university.
The largest public university in Washington is the University of the District of Columbia, which was founded in 1851 and offers a large number of postgraduate programmes. Specialist institutions in the city include America's National and Intelligence Universities.
