Warwick is a historic market town in England’s West Midlands, located close to the banks of the River Avon. Famous for its medieval castle, Warwick lends its name to the University of Warwick – a public research university based in the suburbs of nearby Coventry.
Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire, acting as a centre for local government. Together with the attractive neighbouring town of Leamington Spa, Warwick forms a contiguous urban area of nearly 100,000 people.
It was founded in 914 AD, while Warwick’s castle dates back to a fortress established by William the Conqueror in 1068. The imposing present-day structure of Warwick Castle is mainly a result of the fortification work of successive Earls of Warwick in the 14th and 15th centuries. One of the best preserved medieval castles in the country, Warwick Castle is now a popular tourist attraction hosting regular re-enactments in traditional surroundings.
The town of Warwick is also blessed with several historic buildings, from the timber-framed 14th-century Lord Leycester Hospital to St Johns House, a Jacobean mansion. Warwick has a busy calendar of events and festivals held throughout the year, including Warwick Folk Festival and Warwick Word History Festival. The Warwick Arts Centre (located on the University of Warwick campus) is one of the UK’s most renowned arts complexes, hosting a wealth of cultural events throughout the year.
The University of Warwick was established in 1965 on the outskirts of Coventry, with the help of the city and county councils. Although it takes its name from the town, the University of Warwick campus is around eight miles north of Warwick proper. Most postgraduates studying at Warwick live in nearby Coventry, Leamington Spa or Kenilworth.
Despite its rural location, Warwick has a high-tech economy with several major companies based in the area. National Grid, the organisation responsible for the UK’s energy network, is headquartered in Warwick. Warwick Technology Park, meanwhile, is home to a range of companies including Siemens, IBM and Accenture.
