Austria’s capital Vienna (known as Wien in German) is situated close to the country’s eastern borders with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. It is Austria’s main higher education hub, with 14 universities (alongside other higher education institutions) and around 200,000 students.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Vienna?

Vienna is often referred to as the ‘City of Music’, having been the scene of major compositions and performances by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Haydn and Mahler – to name just a few.

This legacy can still be felt in the modern city, which features some of Europe’s most prestigious theatres and concert halls. Vienna is also famous as the historical capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and as the home of the pioneering psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud.

Postgraduate students in Vienna have the opportunity to live and study in one of the most famous cultural centres in Europe. If you’re into classical music you’ll never have a better or more appropriate opportunity to indulge your interest and, if not, never mind – there’s plenty more to explore while studying in Vienna.

For one thing, you’ll find that the city is also renowned for its cuisine, including regional specialities such as schnitzels and strudels. Cosy Viennese coffee houses are the perfect place to soak up the local culture (and perhaps catch up with your reading). Other attractions include some of Europe’s most renowned parks, palaces and monuments as well as a range of museums and art galleries. The Wiener Prater is a beautiful green space that’s home to one of the world’s oldest amusement parks and an impressive Ferris wheel dating back to 1897.

Vienna has a well-earned reputation for being a great place to live, frequently appearing near the top of quality of life indexes. Student accommodation in Vienna is relatively affordable compared to other European capitals, ranging from dormitories to shared apartments.

Universities in Vienna

Vienna’s oldest university, the University of Vienna, was founded in 1365 and is also the oldest university in the German-speaking world (as well as one of the oldest universities in Europe). It is a world top 200 institution and has produced 15 Nobel laureates.

In addition to the University of Vienna, there are a range of other high-quality higher education providers offering the chance to study a Masters in Vienna. These include the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the Vienna University of Technology and the Medical School of Vienna, as well as international branch campuses.

German is the primary language of instruction in Vienna but increasing numbers of Masters programmes are taught in English.
