Sociology and Social Research

This Master focuses on theoretically and methodologically advanced research in sociology; the aim is to develop testable theories to explain social phenomena.

This programme is interdisciplinary in nature and focuses on theoretically and methodologically advanced research in the field of sociology and the social sciences. The substantive focus is on topics such as social networks and social capital, trust and cooperation, social integration, stratification and inequality, households, organizations, and policy studies.

Students learn to develop theories that are testable explanations of social phenomena rather than conceptual systems devoid of empirical content. They also learn to test such theories using authoritative empirical data-sets and state of the art tools of social science research methodology and data analysis. The integration of social theory, empirical research, and methods of data-analysis is a core feature of the programme. The programme offers many and varied career opportunities.

During this Master's programme, you will be thoroughly trained to analyse and advise on contemporary social issues.
You will therefore develop yourself into an academic professional and an expert on your chosen theme. In these themes, the boundary between public and private is often transcended, which means that once you complete the Master's, you can work in both the private and (semi) public sectors. Potential careers include social science expert, applied researcher in the corporate world, policy advisor at a ministry or municipality, advisor, project coordinator or consultant.

In the one-year Master's programme Sociology: Comtemporary Social Problems, you will be trained to become an expert on one important social theme. You choose one contemporary issue in which you will specialise: Crime and Safety - Internet, Social Media and Networks - Care, Policy and Organisations.

You design your own track in this programme, in which you quickly and rigorously immerse yourself in your specialisation. You will learn about the state-of-the-art in current scholarship. As an expert, you will also learn to think in multidisciplinary terms. Preparing arts professionals for the cultural sector of the future

With a mix of theory, research approaches, and practical work, Arts and Society prepares creative thinkers and doers for a professional career on the cutting edge between art and society.

The cultural world is in a state of rapid transformation due to technological innovation, urbanization, economic globalization, and an increasingly unpredictable sociopolitical landscape. All facets of the arts – practice, organisation, leadership, societal relevance, and internationalization (in Europe and beyond) – are affected by this transformation. Utrecht's Master of Arts and Society will prepare you to operate as a leading figure in the global arts, media, and cultural sectors of the future.

Our Master's programme was designed to meet the urgent need for arts professionals who possess rigorous theoretical and research skills coupled with practical abilities and an acute awareness of the current state of the sector at the local and global levels. As a student in this programme you will explore, for example, the dynamics and dilemmas within existing mainstream culture and its relationship with a growing number of “alternative” cultural practices, new models of creative production and industry, and the ever-increasing role of the arts in social justice.

Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies

This Master's programme will train you to become a competent professional so you are able to analyse and influence problematic childrearing situations and it will enable you to contribute to the innovation of pedagogic care systems.

Childrearing is not always easy. The Master's programme in Orthopedagogy emphasises the childrearing needs of children, youth and parents. As a remedial educationalist, you can diagnose, treat and help prevent childrearing and development problems at home and/or in an institution. Moreover, you can contribute to the innovation of pedagogic care systems.

Tracks

We offer you a programme with two specialisations:
-Orthopedagogical Care for Children, Youth and Parents (direct client contact)
-Orthopedagogical Systems & Innovation (indirect client contact)

In the programme you will learn to research practical questions from an orthopedagogical viewpoint. This will enable you to help families and their surrounding networks (schools, neighbourhood teams, etc.). The Master's programme fulfils the requirements of the Dutch (Professional) Association of Educationalists (NVO) for registration as a general remedial educationalist. Following completion of the programme you can register as a general remedial educationalist and work as a behavioural scientist in various institutions for orthopedagogical care and childrearing issues.

Youth, Education and Society

In our overscheduled society is there still enough time for childrearing? How is childrearing changing through the use of social media? How are young people (de)radicalised? What leads to game addiction and inactivity in our society? What do children need to find their own solutions to bullying at school? How does childrearing support fit into non-Western communities? How should suitable education be organised? How should the new frameworks for youth care in the Netherlands be structured? What can we learn from foreign approaches to education and youth services?

Do you want to make a contribution to contemporary social challenges involving the relationship between children and youth and their guardians/educators? Do you want to help draft new policies that can improve the position, welfare and development of children, youth and their parents? Are you interested in making international comparisons? Youth, Education and Society (Dutch: Maatschappelijke opvoedingsvraagstukken) is the only Master's programme in the Netherlands that specifically focuses on innovating pedagogical policy and practice, both nationally and internationally.
