The MA degree in history provides a broad base for teaching excellence, a platform for studies leading to the Ph.D., and skills for professions in both the public and private sectors. Students in the MA program concentrate in United States, European, or World/Comparative history and may take up to six semester hours in a discipline related to their major field of study (with permission of the graduate coordinator). The MA in history may be earned by completing either a thesis or non-thesis program. The non-thesis option is designed for students who desire more content courses as background for their own teaching, further academic work, or personal enrichment. The thesis option is designed for students who wish to conduct original research on the Master's level. MA graduates from the West Chester program have gone on to a variety of Ph.D. programs in the United States and abroad.

Course Outcomes

Graduate history courses at WCU enhance the ability of students to:

• Construct generalizations and interpretations that demonstrate an advanced knowledge of historical eras, change over time, and key historical concepts in the history of the United States, Western Civilization, and global civilization.

• Communicate effectively at the graduate level (in both oral and written presentations) their advanced knowledge of history in reasoned arguments supported by historical evidence and an appreciation of multiple causes, effects, and perspectives.

• Locate, distinguish between, and assess primary and secondary sources, and to analyze and interpret a variety of written, oral, visual, and material evidence at an advanced level (Information Literacy).

• Connect their advanced knowledge of historical events and topics to a broader context (historical, historiographical, political, global, or with contemporary life and issues).

Master of Arts (M.A.)

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 30 credits of course work, which includes a major field (at least 18 credits). Students must take at least 6 credits outside of their major field, preferably but not necessarily all in the same field, as defined below. Within these credits, M.A. students must complete either a thesis (6 credits) or a Master's Essay (3 credits).

Major Fields

The M.A. program in history offers a choice of three major fields in areas that are particularly well supported by the research and teaching interests of the history faculty:

  •    American History
  •    World History
  •    History of Technology, Environment and Medicine/Health

To ensure a program of reasonable depth and coherence, each student takes at least 18 credits of course work in one of these major fields, chosen in consultation with the Graduate History Director or designated advisor. In a typical year, at least three or four courses are offered in each category, and there are additional opportunities to take independent reading and research courses, and courses at Rutgers-New Brunswick, in all three areas. A number of courses may fulfill requirements in more than one field.

Courses Outside the Major Field

To add breadth and diversity to the program of study, each student must take at least two courses (6 credits) outside of the chosen major field. These two courses should preferably both be in the same field, but this is not required.

Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.)

The M.A.T. in history is a terminal degree for students who are preparing for - or are already engaged in - careers in secondary school teaching. It does not by itself provide certification for teaching in New Jersey public schools. However, M.A.T. students are usually permitted to earn a portion of their program credits in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in an approved Education Department, thus securing some of the education credits needed for New Jersey certification.

Degree Requirements

The program consists of 30 credits, at least 18 of which must be in graduate history courses, and up to 12 of which may be in approved education courses.

M.A.T. students choose from among the same graduate history courses, and must meet the same class reading and writing requirements, as M.A. students. However, M.A.T. students:

  •    do not select a major field
  •    do not have a thesis option
  •    must write a Master's Essay

All M.A. and M.A.T. students are expected to maintain a "B" or better average through the duration of their studies; otherwise, they may not be allowed to remain in the program.

Certification to Teach in New Jersey

The M.A.T. Program does not provide certification. New Jersey certification requires 30 credits in particular education courses, 12 of which may be counted toward the M.A.T. Hence, a student wishing to pursue both the M.A.T. in History and certification would have to take a total of 48 credits (12 fewer than if the student pursued the M.A.T. and certification separately).

Please note that acceptance into the M.A.T. program does not guarantee acceptance into the Urban Teacher Education Program. Students who are interested in becoming certified to teach in New Jersey schools must satisfy the requirements for admission into the Urban Teacher Education Program.

Perspectives on History and Practice

The MA History of Design and Curatorial Studies curriculum offers practical and theoretical instruction in researching and displaying interiors and design objects such as furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and works in other media. New courses on curatorial studies and courses exploring the history of design in social and cultural context reflect the program’s broadened scope and relevance. They can also study abroad or pursue their degree at Parsons Paris, benefiting from our relationship with Musée des Arts Décoratifs, our partner museum.

Hands-On Experience

Students complete the 42 required credits in two years of full-time study or three to four years of part-time study. At the renovated Cooper Hewitt, graduate students have opportunities to curate exhibitions, create programming for the public, and produce interpretive materials — all of which provide essential hands-on experience in museum and curatorial practices. Access to the Smithsonian’s Design Library, New School library holdings, and the library consortium enriches object-based research.

This prestigious two-year master’s degree program, which Parsons offers in conjunction with Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, brings an object-focused, practice-based approach to the study of European and American decorative arts and design dating from the Renaissance to the present. Housed for more than 30 years at Cooper Hewitt — the only U.S. museum devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design — the program enables students to work directly with the museum’s collections and its curators, conservators, educators, and designers.

Support for Broad Research Horizons

For-credit internships enable students to explore professions in museums, auction houses, and galleries and on new online platforms. Also available are a limited number of master’s curatorial fellowships at Cooper Hewitt, which provide partial tuition remission, as well as tuition support from the Lee B. Anderson Memorial Foundation, whose mission is to support programs that advance the understanding of and appreciation for the decorative arts. In addition, MA students can apply for paid teaching assistantships. Parsons’ School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) programs reflect the faculty’s expertise in areas including art and design methodology and philosophy, design criticism, cultural anthropology, sustainability, and material culture and are designed to provide students with opportunities to take related courses within ADHT. Students can take courses and participate in collaborative projects throughout Parsons and The New School, which open up new topics and areas of investigation in curatorial practice and historical research.

Students graduate prepared to join alumni who work in some of the world’s most prestigious nonprofit, commercial, cultural, and academic institutions. The Department of History offers both MA and PhD degrees in several major fields, including those that center on the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Ottoman Empire. While concentrating on the history of one nation or geographic area, students are encouraged to develop a comparative or global perspective in their work and may work in thematic areas such as the history of science, medicine and technology; global history; imperialism; and women, gender and sexuality. The department cooperates closely with a host of interdisciplinary programs and departments to offer students additional instruction in comparative and world history perspectives.
