A Message from Department Chair Lekan Latinwo, Ph.D
On behalf of Biology faculty, staff, and students, I am delighted to welcome you to the department of Biological Sciences at Florida A&M University, and to also provide you with a brief overview of our department through this electronic medium. The department offers Bachelors and Masters Degree programs and currently has an enrollment of 850 majors with low attrition rate. The undergraduate degree program consists of three tracks: 1) General Biology, 2) Pre-Medicine/Pre-Dentistry, and 3) Cellular and Molecular Biology. The M.S. degree is offered in the following three areas: 1) Cell and Molecular Biology, 2) Physiology, 3) Ecology and Plant Physiology.
We are fortunate in our department to have a dynamic group of faculty, staff and students whose strength reside in our abilities to appreciate old ideas, while eagerly willing to investigate and advance new ideas, and promote enduring knowledge. In addition, we are aiming at creating an academic environment in which both young and old students and scholars from all races and ethnic backgrounds can congregate for educational challenges and opportunities to perform their ultimate best. In our department, we strive to shape the agenda and totally refuse to let it shape us. We also engage in necessary dialogues to define and reinforce the goals and values of our department as it relates to the university mission of Excellence with Caring.
The Department of Biological Sciences' Mission parallels the mission of Florida A&M University’s, which is to provide an enlightened and enriched academic, intellectual, moral, cultural, ethical, technological and student-centered environment, conducive to the development of highly qualified individuals who are prepared and capable of serving as leaders and contributors in our ever-evolving society. The department is dedicated to providing contemporary quality undergraduate and graduate education in several areas of Biological Sciences including Pre-medical Biology to Science Education. The structure of our programs ensures that students are exposed to courses that will prepare them for careers in all areas of the field of biology. The laboratory experiences offered by the department require that students develop competencies in the use of modern biological techniques, and in the analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. Part of our mission is to create opportunities for our students to gain research experience. Many of our talented faculty members serve as mentors to our undergraduate students conducting research. Our students are well prepared to enter graduate or professional schools, such as medical, dental and pharmacy school, or to enter immediate employment after graduation. It is our goal to produce graduate students who conduct publishable research. We also prepare our graduate students to continue their education in doctoral or medical programs. The department serves non-majors as well, exposing this population of students to biological concepts which impact their lives. The MS in data science has a strong career focus and aims to prepare students with the practical and theoretical skills to handle large-scale data management and analysis challenges that arise in today's data-driven organizations.
The program enables students to work with active researchers in the field of data science, analytics, and infrastructure who can provide hands-on experience with real data and real problems. The curriculum includes opportunities for students to choose elective courses to pursue a variety of career paths within the broad field of data science and its various application areas. The goal of the program is to prepare students, regardless of their scientific, engineering, or business background, to pursue a career in data science.
The program is broad-based and comprehensive, combining computing and statistics courses. Core courses include statistics, data management, analytics, and software engineering. Elective courses provide students an opportunity to explore different areas of data science while a capstone project or thesis round out the program.
International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE. A minimum TOEFL score of 88 (internet-based) is required. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is required. The English language test score requirement is waived for native speakers of English or for those submitting transcripts from degrees earned at American institutions.
Health informatics studies the nature of medical data and the use of information technology to manage health-related information in medical practice, education, and research. With increases in the application and uses of information technology in the medical industry, there is an unprecedented need for professionals who can combine their knowledge of computing and health care to improve the safety and quality of care delivery, as well as to help control costs.
The MS degree in health informatics applies the creative power of information technology to the information and data needs of health care. This includes the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of patient data, as well as access to electronically maintained medical knowledge for use in patient care, research, and education. Professionals in the field require computing expertise; an understanding of formal medical terminology, clinical processes, and guidelines; and an understanding of how information and communication systems can be used to successfully deliver patient information in various health care settings. The program is offered online only.
The program offers two tracks: the clinician track and analyst track.

Parsons’ Master of Science in Data Visualization is a multidisciplinary program in which students develop skills bringing together visual design, computer science, statistical analysis, and ethical considerations of data analysis and representation. The presentation of data plays a critical role in the shaping of opinion, policy, and decision making in today’s increasingly global society. Giving students a competitive edge as they enter the field, the MS program responds to the increased demand for experts who can turn data into insight.

Housed within Parsons’ School of Art, Media, and Technology, the MS Data Visualization program can be completed in one or two years. The 30-credit curriculum integrates theory and studio practice, so students acquire the creative, quantitative, and coding tools needed to analyze and depict data, gaining a holistic understanding of context, audience, and objectives. With the MS in Data Visualization, students obtain the diverse skill set needed for success in a range of careers related to data interpretation. Students graduate with portfolios demonstrating their ability to create databases and Web-based software tools that reflect an understanding of data analysis and information visualization for varied applications.
The program’s setting in New York City, a technological hub and pioneer of open-source culture, offers invaluable industry access. Students intern with industry leaders and external partners from the government, nonprofit, and commercial sectors. Faculty invite guest lecturers and critics to share their insights and expose students to new possibilities in data visualization and related career paths.
Graduates find success in a wide variety of fields including data analysis, digital design, advertising and branding, journalism, business consulting and analytics strategy, management, strategic planning, entrepreneurship, social enterprise, public policy, trend forecasting, and business intelligence.

Financial Aid Deadline
All applicants selected for admission into our program are considered for a merit scholarship award that is determined by the strength of their application. Scholarship award notification is communicated at the same time as the admission decision. International students are eligible only for merit scholarships. If you are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, we encourage you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be found on the Web at http://www.fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is available each year on October 1. You do not need to wait for an admission decision to apply for federal aid; we recommend submitting by our FAFSA priority deadline of February 1 for fall applicants. Offered through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Master of Science in Computer Engineering prepares students to apply sophisticated computer architecture and integrated circuit design techniques toward modern computing systems using industry-standard design tools. Faculty and students work together to explore solutions for photonic computing; create state-of-the-art advances in high-performance computing; and improve the reliability of cloud computing.
The program offers up-to-date knowledge and skills in the advances of computer systems architecture and networking, as well as the rapidly-growing use of superscalar microprocessors, real-time embedded systems, VLSI and ASIC design modules, digital signal processors and networked computing platforms.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers two master graduate degree programs in ECE: Master of Science (MS) and Master of Engineering (ME)
After graduation, our MS, ME and PhD graduates are employed as electrical and computer engineers supporting industries like automotive, manufacturing, systems integration, shipbuilding, aerospace, defense, telecommunications, etc. They are also employed as researchers by private research and development labs or by federally funded organizations (Jefferson Lab, NASA, or the Naval Research Laboratories). Some of our former doctoral students have also gone into academic careers doing postdoctoral fellowships or are working in universities as faculty members.
