Students at the Columbia School of Social Work earn their MSW degrees by completing a progressive sequence of courses designed in accordance with the standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the School’s accrediting body.

All MSW students are required to take courses in human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, research, social work practice, and field education. At CSSW, students are required to earn a total of 60 credits, along with 1,200 hours in the field.

The majority of our students complete these requirements in two years—or four semesters (fall, spring, fall, spring). They spend two days a week in class and three days a week at their field placements. The Two-Year Program begins with a required Orientation in August and concludes with graduation in May of the second academic year.

Field Education

Field education is a vital part of earning an MSW. It is where students learn how to apply social work theories from the classroom to social work practice.
Field Education Requirements

Each semester, students spend three days a week (21 hours), working at a placement site—one day more than the minimum specified by the Council on Social Work Education. Students must earn 1,200 fieldwork hours to receive the MSW.

During a student’s first (foundational) year, the focus is on generalist social work practice. In the second (advanced practice) year, the focus is on the student’s chosen method area of concentration and field of practice.

Become an Agent of Change

The Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program prepares students for beginning and advanced practice in social work in a variety of settings. The curriculum includes courses in human behavior and the social environment, social welfare services and policy, research methods, administration, practice methods, special topics, and field education. Students learn to engage individual and community strengths to further the understanding, treatment, and prevention of individual and social problems.
The curriculum for the MSW degree is divided into two levels: the professional foundation and the advanced generalist concentration. Students complete the professional foundation before moving to the advanced generalist portion of the curriculum.
Students are admitted for either full-time or part-time study in the 64-credit MSW program. Full-time students complete the program in 2 years, taking 16 credits each semester for 4 semesters. Full-time students with bachelor's degrees in social work in the advanced standing program earn their MSWs in less than one calendar year. Part-time students complete the program in 3.5 years, taking 6 or 7 credits each semester, including summer sessions. Beginning in Fall 2015, the part-time program will be offered as a blended program, allowing students the opportunity to complete half of their classroom experiences online. The program will offer one online course each semester where students will meet in a virtual classroom for discussions, presentations, and group work.

Applicant qualifications:

- Minimum of 24 credit hours (undergraduate) in the liberal arts and sciences, with a minimum of 15 credit hours in the social sciences (anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology)
- Paid or volunteer experience related to human services

The MPA + MSW Dual-Degree Program prepares students for administrative positions in social service agencies. It also helps social workers gain the management and administrative skills needed for roles as supervisors, administrators and agency heads. Similarly, public administration practitioners recognize the need for specialized knowledge and skills to respond to an environment of increasing policy and organizational complexity within social welfare agencies. The program is designed to ensure students acquire both the management and social work skills necessary to excel in these environments.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and Master's in Social Work (MSW).

Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant in a professional capacity, such as professors, work supervisors, and professionals from organizations where the applicant has served as a volunteer or in another capacity. When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

- The GRE is not required. If GRE scores are submitted, the admissions committee evaluates them by averaging the applicant's quantitative, verbal, and analytical writing scores.

Course Details

The first part of the MSW program is professional foundation content. Students typically complete their foundation coursework during the first semester (advanced standing) or first year (60-credit-hour) of enrollment. Typically, students enroll in advanced courses, including electives and course related to the student’s chosen concentration, only after they have completed their professional foundation courses.

Students may also enroll in the MSW program on a part-time basis. Part-time students typically complete the program in four years.

The School offers field education placements throughout the state of Alabama and occasionally in neighboring states. MSW students may also apply to complete their advanced field education placement (SW 595) in Washington, DC.

Management of environmental, health and safety issues has changed significantly in the past twenty years. The emergence of voluntary standards and codes of conduct, including international standards, coupled with the need to manage costs and limited resources has resulted in a trend to move beyond regulatory compliance. Now, companies work toward sustainability through the use of integrated environmental, health and safety management systems, which are woven into key business processes. Although they are distinct disciplines, environmental management, occupational health, and workplace safety share many technical, regulatory, and organizational characteristics. Today's professionals now need to be educated in all three areas.

Graduates are employed by Fortune 100 companies, environmental, health and safety consultancies, universities, and government agencies such as the EPA, OSHA, and NYSDEC.

Plan of study

The MS degree in environmental, health and safety management provides students with a solid foundation in the managerial aspects of developing and implementing environmental, health and safety management systems that can move organizations toward a more sustainable and socially responsible future. In addition, students gain a solid technical foundation in air emissions, wastewater, solid and hazardous waste, occupational safety and occupational health (industrial hygiene). Elements of sustainability are integrated into most of the core courses and some electives

The program consists of 33 credit hours and may be completed entirely through online learning, or via a combination of online and traditional on-campus courses. The curriculum consists of core courses, professional electives, and a choice of a graduate thesis, project, or exam.

Professional electives are subject to availability and include Fire Protection, Occupational Health, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Industrial Wastewater Management, Air Emissions Management, Occupational Safety, Mechanical and Electrical Controls and Standards, EHS Law, EHS Accounting and Finance, EHS Project Management, and Organizational Behavior and Leadership. Additional professional electives are available in topics such as business management, quality, sustainability, and other areas.

Other admission requirements

-Have completed at least 9 semester hours of college-level course work in the sciences, with at least 3 semester credit hours in each of the following categories: chemistry, biology, and physics.
-Submit two professional recommendations.
-Submit two writing samples to demonstrate written communication skills.
-Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work.
-Submit a clearly written one-page statement of purpose.
-Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae.
-Complete a graduate application.
-International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 570 (paper-based) or 88 (Internet-based) is required. Scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will be accepted in place of the TOEFL exam. Minimum acceptable scores will vary; however, the absolute minimum score for an unconditional acceptance is 6.5. It is recommended that international students begin the program in the fall semester.

Applicants with acceptable professional certification(s) and/or work experience may have pre-requisite science course work waived.

Applicants without formal academic training or documented experience in air emmisions, waste water, solid and hazardous waste, occupational health, or occupational safety may be required to take professional electives in these areas.

Students without related work experience may complete a graduate cooperative education placement during their program of study. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required; however, applicants may submit test scores to support their candidacy.

Students choose one three-credit elective from IUP courses that are appropriate for their needs and interests and meet the program objectives. Courses offered by the Employment and Labor Relations, Sociology, and Psychology departments might be of particular interest to students for this elective.

Students that anticipate continuing their education in a doctoral program could choose to complete a thesis instead of an elective course. The thesis would require six credit hours, bringing their degree total to 39 credits.

Online

The master's program is offered entirely online. The online format allows for students to participate in courses from anywhere in the world where internet access is available. In addition, it allows for the flexibility of completing your master's degree without interrupting your career.

Master's students are provided NSU computer accounts including email and Blackboard, but must obtain their own Internet service providers, use their own computer systems and have a usable web camera. Online students use the web to access course materials, announcements, email, distance library services, subscription library databases, and other information, and for interaction with faculty and fellow students. Online, interactive learning methods are based on the use of Blackboard as a course management system. Online activities facilitate frequent student-to-faculty and student-to-student interaction. They are supported by threaded discussion boards, white boards, chat rooms, email, and multimedia presentations. In addition, Blackboard enables students to submit assignments online in multimedia formats and to receive their professors’ reviews of assignments online in the same formats.
