Graduate Certificate Program Consumer Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation

Workplace research indicates that managers and supervisors spend as much as forty percent of the workday resolving nonproductive conflict issues. Conflict that is poorly managed results in burdening costs for both the individual and the organization. Expanding worldwide development, the global economy, and population growth and associated social issues drive the intermingling of cultures and practices that increase the incidence of workplace conflict and destructive disagreement. Interest in and demand for conflict management has consequently risen.

The Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation provides students with the tools to manage, resolve, negotiate, and mediate conflict and to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for living and earning. Conflict management training actively engages the student in self-exploration regarding issues of perception, bigotry, bias, values, beliefs, differences, and culture. The student will learn how to verbally and physically converse without allowing differences to interfere with collaboration. Business, government, and community agencies value these skills to increase productivity and to maximize a positive workplace climate. The ability to creatively manage conflict is a skill that most employers value.

- HES 512 - Introduction to Environmental Health & Safety Management

This course presents an overview of environmental health and safety (EH&S) management with its emphasis on preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The importance of considering relevant science and engineering in all EH&S management decisions is emphasized. Governmental regulations and insurance matters affecting EH&S performance also are identified and discussed. Qualifications for employment in the field of EH&S management are described and current career opportunities are explored.

- HES 513- Occupational Health & Safety Law

This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of issues that can impact upon private sector employers under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, including rule making, the duty to comply with standards, General Duty Clause, requirements at multi-employer worksites, record-keeping, employer and employee rights, refusal to work and whistle blower protection, hazard communication, voluntary safety and health audits, inspections and investigations, citations, criminal enforcement, and judicial review. This course will also provide students with an introduction to peripheral “toxic tort” law concepts that should be understood by Safety and Health Managers including theories of liability, CERCLA liability, employer liability, tort defenses, causation, injuries, damages, and mass tort actions.

- HES 514- Health & Safety Regulations & Regulatory Compliance

This course addresses regulatory compliance as an important objective of all EH & S managers and the companies they represent. Focus is directed to workplace regulations of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The purpose, history, structure, jurisdiction, and operations of the agency are presented. Major health and safety standards that have been promulgated by OSHA are considered in some detail. Students learn how their organization can prepare for and respond to OSHA inspections effectively.

- HES 516- Practical Statistics for Safety Professionals

This course provides students with an introduction to basic research methods and statistical analysis for safety managers. Students will be introduced to foundational concepts of problem statement development, variables, hypothesis testing, and research design. Additionally, relevant descriptive and inferential statistic used in the field of Occupational Health and Safety will be covered with an emphasis on the interpretation of results. Students will learn a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The inferential techniques include an emphasis on statistical inference that is commonly used in safety management (e.g., t-tests and correlation). The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic research methods and statistical concepts required by safety managers to identify and mitigate risks using quantitative measures.

- HES 518 - Environmental Law

This course will provide students with a framework understanding of key federal environmental statutes and regulatory requirements that are likely to impact upon the day-to-day operation of a business or industrial facility that a company's Safety and Health Manager should be familiar with, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Underground Storage Tank (UST) program, Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

- CSM 537- Developing the Leader Within

This course takes an in-depth look at leadership theories, principles, qualities, styles, and models with a focus on developing leadership skills and potential within the individual students. Designed to assist students in identifying leadership styles, traits, strengths, and opportunities for improvement, this course will use self-assessment exercises, journaling, individual case studies, group case studies, active and collaborative learning exercises, and a field experience to explore the topic of leadership in depth. Each student will create a personal and individually-tailored plan for development of leadership skills in a field experience that will be helpful in preparing for future endeavors.

- CSM 525- Consumer Conflict Resolution

CSM 425/525 is an exploration of practical conflict mediation, negotiation, and management and a survey of theory and practice of formal and informal mediation.

MSOE’s Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) graduate program is based on the philosophy that, for American companies to grow and compete internationally, their technical personnel must have the tools to effectively manage and participate in the decision-making process. Sustainability issues are being addressed in many industries, nonprofits and governmental agencies and are incorporated broadly into different organizational functions, all with the common goal of creating a sustainable economy, society, and environment.

There is a growing demand for sustainability professionals in a range of sectors, and many lawyers, engineers, marketers, communications professionals, policymakers and scientists now have some form of sustainability responsibility in their positions. The M.S. in Sustainability Management, co-sponsored by The Earth Institute and the School of Professional Studies, addresses the need for formal training and education in sustainability.

The M.S. in Sustainability Management is based upon years of experience in bridging research and practice, with a curriculum based on new and existing courses at the University, taught by faculty and researchers who are leaders in the fields of environmental management, earth science, and engineering. In response to the increasing global challenges all organizations face, from limiting their carbon emissions to managing their water resources, the program melds academic leadership, scientific rigor, and professional practice to form a unique interdisciplinary community dedicated to making lasting advances in global sustainability practice.

The program takes a bold and innovative approach to sustainability that prioritizes the protection of Earth’s systems and resources as well as the spread of social and economic opportunities for all people. To achieve sustainable development, the Earth Institute is conducting and applying interdisciplinary scientific research to address many cross-cutting issues while training a new generation of problem solvers to tackle these issues in all areas of society. Finding solutions to one problem, involves tackling other related challenges. This is at the core of sustainability management. This new generation of problem solvers needs to be able to account for complex systems of water, environmental services, climate, waste and energy to be able to maximize efficient usage and minimize their negative impacts.

The Earth Institute is affiliated with 30 academic programs at Columbia University, and has developed numerous innovative courses training students to understand and address the pressing and complex issues of environment and sustainability management, and provides seminars and events in the field. These areas complement a strong foundation of core courses that equip graduates with the skills and training necessary to maintain an advantage in the highly competitive sports job market and, once hired, add immediate value to sports industry employers. A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Health Care Systems Management from MSOE, with its unique blend of nursing, business, and engineering concepts will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively in the health care environment. MSOE’s MSN program is based on the fact that nurses at mid-management and executive levels and nurse entrepreneurs must have the capacity to manage financial resources, manage human capital, analyze large data sets, understand complex organizational systems, and ensure quality and safety, all through the lens of nursing practice. The curriculum in the MSN program meets this need by blending the expertise of the faculty of the School of Nursing and the Rader School of Business with the student’s knowledge and experience. The MSN in Health Care Systems Management is best described as a graduate degree in nursing blended with business concepts.

Designed to accommodate busy working professionals, courses are available via blended-online format. This combines the benefits of face-to-face interaction with the convenience of online learning. The blended-online delivery format provides flexibility to balance graduate education with work and family responsibilities.

Blended Internet delivery

Blended Internet delivery combines the rich faculty/student interaction that is the hallmark of an MSOE education with the flexibility of online learning. The amount of time students spend in class is reduced, while time spent on project-focused learning is enhanced.

MSOE’s blended classes meet fact-to-face during alternating weeks. Meetings occur during the evening on “even” numbered or “odd” numbered weeks each academic term. Online learning activities are scheduled during non-meeting weeks and are facilitated via MSOE’s Blackboard instructional platform. Digital lectures, interactive discussions, investigative case studies, computerized simulations and synchronous chats are examples of online learning experiences used by MSOE faculty.
