The M.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics program is designed to prepare students to join the workforce as a consulting mathematician or to pursue doctoral study in computational and industrial mathematics or other computationally-intensive field of study. 

Distinctive features include:

• Project-oriented approach in all courses - real-world industrial problems motivate coursework
• Team problem-solving practica emulate an industrial microcosm in which undergrads, grads, faculty, and industrial partners work together to study real-world problems
• Dual emphasis is placed on computational mathematics in the study of all real-world projects in each course of the curriculum

Students who complete the proposed program will:

• Acquire advanced knowledge of a wide variety of topics that span the realm of applied mathematics, including differential equations, discrete mathematics, probabilistic modelling, optimisation and statistical analysis. 
• Become adept at employing all steps of the mathematical modelling process in the analysis of real-world phenomena.
• Acquire expertise in using various forms of technology and in using, modifying, and creating numerical algorithms used in the analysis of real-world phenomena,
• Develop the valuable intuition of using the right tool for the right job.

Collaborators and Local Industry

Representatives from the private sector consisting of mathematicians and scientists from large companies such as Vanguard, and PrimePay; employees of up-and-coming software companies such as iPipeline; and representatives of small privately-owned consulting firms and hedge fund companies, such as Wagner Associates and TFS Capital were consulted in the creation of this program.  We are continually expanding our network of collaborators within the private sector, with our newest collaborator being Stroud Preserve in West Chester.

Vastly different types of mathematical problems are studied by the members of this group.  Many have agreed to contribute to this M.S. program by way of delivering colloquium talks about their experiences in industry, and by creating and investigating real-world problems in our practicum courses.

The Master of Arts program in Mathematics is designed to develop the student’s ability to work independently and to obtain basic knowledge in algebra, real and complex variables, and topology so that mathematics literature can be read with understanding and enjoyment. The successful completion of this program should prepare a student to enter a second-year doctoral program in mathematics, to begin a career as an industrial mathematician or as a faculty member at a junior or community college. Ideal candidates for the MS in Applied Mathematics program have completed a calculus sequence, an introductory course in linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and probability and statistics. Computer programming skill is also required.

-Core courses include deterministic models in operations research, mathematical statistics, and analysis for applied mathematics.
-Choose from a broad range of electives such as complex variables, applied regression analysis, applied statistical methods, nonlinear programming models, advanced simulation, and more.
-Completion requires a minimum of 27 credits of coursework in addition completing a thesis or an internship.

Degree Plans

A total of 30 hours of graduate work is required to obtain a master’s degree in mathematics. Candidates for the master’s degree may choose one of two plans:

Plan I requires successful completion of 24 semester hours of course work, plus a thesis supervised by a graduate faculty in mathematics. Students completing this plan will enroll in 6 hours of MATH 599: Thesis Research. A copy of your thesis or project must be available to each committee member at least two weeks prior to the presentation.

Plan II requires no thesis, but 27 semester hours of courses plus 3 hours of research (MATH 598: Non-Thesis Project) devoted to a project supervised by a member of the graduate faculty in mathematics. A copy of the master’s degree approved project or thesis must be provided to mathematics department.

There is also a one-year or three-semester master’s degree program. The graduate program director can provide further information.

Concentrations

Candidates for the master’s degree in mathematics can specialize in pure or applied mathematics, mathematics education, or mathematics finance.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to the idea that pure and applied mathematics are two faces of the same subject. The department offers a lively research atmosphere; faculty research areas include algebra, analysis, combinatorics, geometry/topology, number theory, and probability and statistics. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the broad range of courses and specializations available.

The department is noted for its method of graduate education. In first-year courses, the emphasis is on training the student to do mathematics in depth. Many students report that these courses are the formative experiences of their professional lives.

The MA program is intended to give the student a solid professional basis either for proceeding to the PhD program or for work in government, industry or teaching at the community college level.

The PhD degree prepares a student for university or college teaching and for higher-level employment in government and industry. Entering students having substantial graduate-level training may enter the PhD program, skipping the MA.

Graduates of the program typically find employment as teachers, those with the MA degree at community college level and those with the PhD degree at university and college level, while significant number also find employment with government and industry as statisticians, data analysts, consultants, researchers and programmers.

Recent doctoral graduate placements include: Mathematical/Statistical Engineer at Corning Incorporated, Postdoctoral Biostatistician at Janssen Research and Development, Assistant Professor at Alfred University, Risk Analyst for JP Morgan Chase, Assistant Professor at Juniata College, Assistant Professor at Ohio State University.

Columbia University’s new Master of Science in Applied Analytics empowers you to assess the application of an organization’s data and analytics. You will learn how to define and frame analytical problems, how to decide which data are collected and what analyses should be performed, and how to communicate and work with analysts on solutions that are technically sound as well as valuable to the organization. Available part-time and full-time, the program is anchored by three week-long courses on Columbia’s campus in New York City that feature networking, group exercises, and guest lecturers. Between these courses, you will complete additional coursework on campus or online through a networked learning platform. Program Structure

The program consists of required courses in two core areas. Completing your Integrated Capstone Project, you will apply what you have learned in the two core components to a real-world analytics project sponsored by a leading organization.
Students requiring an F1 visa must enroll full-time (12 credits) and study on campus. Students on an F1 visa are permitted to complete no more than one online class each semester. Students not on an F1 visa have the flexibility to enroll in courses online or on-campus. For these students, if desired, 68% of the coursework can be completed online. The program offers one core course each semester in a block week format at a Columbia University location in New York City which reduces the amount of time on campus for students located outside the New York metropolitan area.
