The School of Art, Design and Media at the University of Portsmouthhas a long history as an art college with a diversity of disciplines. It recently celebrated its 100th year. It merged with the University of Portsmouth in the 1990s, and is part of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. At the School of Art, Design and Media, there is great emphasis on the integration of research, practice and context. Staff and students are encouraged to be research active and disseminate research outcomes. Postgraduate activity is taken seriously and is considered elemental to the School's research strategy.
Building upon the rich tradition of art and design education which has existed in Portsmouth since 1870, in the School of Art, Design and Media we provide an educational ethos that emphasises creativity, adaptability and communication, with a distinctive relationship between practice and research in a cultural context.
Our research degree programmes fully exploit the links with other disciplines within the University. We prioritise acceptance of research degree candidates whose intended programme of research further supports the knowledge base of the School’s research areas and their development as outlined below.
