-Course Delivery – There are two modes of delivery, Distance Learning and Blended Learning with the only difference between the two modes being the tutorials. Narrated lectures, subject guides and supporting material will all be delivered online. Why? Flexibility. Busy working lives, and a turbulent environment mean that professionals don't have time for day release and it is reflective of how people want to learn in the digital age.
-Residential Weekends - Which will take place once a trimester (5 during the programme in total) - these will be a mixture of experiential learning workshops designed to build skills and develop self awareness, visiting speakers sharing experience of HR in practice and application in practice sessions to demonstrate the connection between what the student has learned and what that means for them within their workplace through case studies, discussion and collaborative learning.
-Mentoring programme throughout the Course - Students will be asked to nominate a mentor in their workplace who will become part of their programme of study with the development of learning contracts and scheduled mentoring sessions, the outcomes of which will form of part of the students Continuous Professional Development Record.
-Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to network and attend the CIPD conference, as well as accessdifferent levels of CIPD membership (depending on your progress through the course).

What Will You Study?

The module structure is closely aligned to the CIPD's Advanced Diploma. The advantage of this is that students are now able to take individual modules, to study for Continuous professional Development purposes. If a student took their CIPD qualification some time ago and wants to refresh knowledge and skills in particular subject areas this is now possible.

Or if a student began their studies and haven't finished all the modules in order to finish their studies and need to complete individuals modules to upgrade to Chartered Membership they can. It also means that for those students taking the full programme only two modules will be studied and completed per trimester supporting students in being able to differentiate the subjects and regularly review their progress during the programme. It also means that students can join in January as well as the start of the normal academic year (subject to viability of cohort)

The dissertation which has been the mainstay of the Masters programme is being replaced with a Research for Publication module. Students will be working towards the development of a publishable journal article. Although publication is not guaranteed, the aim is that each year Wrexham Glyndŵr University will see some of the MA HRM Programme students leave, not only with their Master's Qualification but also with a published journal article to add to their CV. Our hope is that our students will not only be learning from contemporary research but contributing to it as well.

Assessment and Teaching

Assessment of modules is predominately a mixture of course work and unseen assessments in relation to the main topic/theme of the modules and is normally based on research within the student’s host organisation.

Online submission of assessments by both Distance Learning and Blended Learning Students will be used to avoid the requirement for students to present their submission in person during school office opening times. Web conferencing platforms are used in some MA HRM Programme modules for live online assessments. Distance Learning Students will be able to perform Oral Assessments, Simulations and Practical assessments using web conferencing platforms where required.

For online assessments to be possible Distance Learning Students must have a webcam, microphone, headset and direct high-speed internet connection. Students are responsible for ensuring that their computer system and internet connection will support the web conferencing platform prior to any assessment. The assessments conducted via Web Conferencing Platforms will be run in ‘real time’ and will be recorded for external moderation purposes.

Other admission requirements

It is therefore considered advantageous for a student to be in employment throughout their study, although students may apply their learning to an organization with which they are familiar.

A student must also satisfy one, or a combination of, the following criteria:
-An initial degree of Glyndŵr University, or another University approved degree awarding body.
-A non-graduate qualification which the University deemed to be of satisfactory standard for the purpose of postgraduate admission.
-Relevant work experience that is deemed to compensate the lack of formal qualifications and have held a position of management responsibility for a minimum of two years.

A student who has already achieved the current or previous CIPD Advanced Diploma may be given permission to proceed directly onto Year 3. Students with other qualifications may also be considered for full or part exemption from the programme in line with Glyndŵr University’s RPL criteria.

On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

The structure provides an intense and highly rewarding learning experience. The induction week will prepare you well for study on your course. Capstone project

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand International Human Resource Management in practice.

It is the expectation of the course that you understand the theory and develop critical thinking skills, which will help you to evaluate the relevance of what you have learnt. All of this comes together by being able to demonstrate rigorous expertise for a business or related organisation.

This flexible course is a part-time Masters level course for those who wish to enhance their effectiveness and confidence in the workplace.

It provides a rounded introduction to the principles of management and is designed to have immediate relevance and application in your current role whilst also providing potential for future progression in both study and your HR career.

The teaching hours are designed to have minimal impact on the working day and additional study is undertaken in your own time, so you can study while working, and won't need ask your employer to release you for significant amounts of time. You can, however, still benefit from regular contact with lecturers and your fellow students.

The MA Human Resource Management has two significant parts. Firstly, there is the Research Methods module. This is a stand-alone module but is also designed to act as the springboard for the next stage, the management report (also known as the dissertation). The Research module is run over one term, usually between 5.00pm – 9.00pm, one day a week for six sessions. Normally the courses start in September and April each year, although this can vary. The MA (HR) course is intended to run over three terms, one for the Research module, and two for the completion of the Management Report (dissertation).

The focus is on personal development of the student group as HR professionals and on developing your managerial techniques, knowledge and skills that are required in the working environment. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to apply your studies to your organisation and to discuss your experiences in class to create a dynamic learning environment. As most students on this focused pathway are already in HR management positions, the opportunity to share in the experience and good practices of your peer group is an invaluable part of the course.

Part 1 – Research Methods:
• (20 M level/Level 7 Credits)
• Taken over one term.

Part 2 – The Management Report (Dissertation):
• (40 M Level / Level 7 Credits)
• Taken over two terms with an allocated supervisor.

Suitability

The MA in Human Resource Management is aimed exclusively for HR professionals who have already completed the CIPD diploma and want to use that to claim exemptions and to attain a full Masters qualification.

Format

The research methods module is run as a small group of usually 10-12 students. Students can expect some bespoke advice and the opportunity of individual tutorials. This will prepare students well for the management report, for this they will be allocated an individual tutor as a dissertation supervisor. Meetings with the supervisor are held on an individual basis at times to suit both parties. All tutors are selected to act as expert advisors for the research that needs to be undertaken by the student. Research reports should be focused on a real-world HR research issue and can be adapted for use in the work place.

Assessment

For the Research Methods students are required to submit a 5,000-word research proposal. This needs to be passed before students can continue to the Management Report. For the MA, a 12,000-15,000-word Management Research Report (dissertation) is required. The minimum pass mark for these modules is 50%.

What can I do next?

Many successful candidates from this course benefit from using their new found qualification and confidence to progress their careers with their current employer, or to use it to secure promotions or new employment elsewhere. Other candidates have used the qualification as a way to improve what they are undertaking within their current role.
