This is an in-service part-time programme, delivered by distance learning via the University of Dundee's Virtual Learning Environment. It is offered in partnership with participating colleges, educational institutions and professional training organisations. In the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, it is worth 60 credits at Level 11 (Masters) at postgraduate level or Level 9 at undergraduate level. The TQFE programme is underpinned by the Scottish Government's (2012) Professional Standards for Lecturers in Scotland's Colleges which define the lecturer's role and contribution to their educational setting.

The programme is normally completed within one academic year, starting in September and finishing in May.

Who should study this course?

The programme is designed for academic staff working in colleges and other educational institutions, who may be fairly new to teaching or who want to develop their existing teaching skills further. Programme participants are often sponsored by their employers. The Scottish Government recommends that all college lecturers should complete TQFE within three years of appointment.

How you will be taught

This programme is an in-service provision offered in partnership with participating colleges and organisations. It is flexible and grounded in professional practice.

For those undertaking the full programme, there are two 30 credit modules to complete - one per semester. Credit (up to 50% of the programme) may be awarded for other teaching qualifications, upon application to the Programme Director.

Each 30 credit module requires 300 hours of notional participant effort which includes directed study via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), work-based activities, face-to-face contact at optional workshops, tutor support via TQFE-Tutor, private study and assessment.

What you will study

There are two modules in the programme - The Effective Lecturer and The Successful Learner – and these correspond to the range of knowledge and skills required for a teaching career in the tertiary education sector.

How you will be assessed

Participants on the Standard Entry route through the programme are given the opportunity to receive formative feedback on each of the two summative written assignments required. In addition to the assignments, participants are required to pass two practical teaching observations, at least one of which will be undertaken by a member of the tutor team (the other observation may be undertaken by an Associate Staff member within their institution).

Careers

The TQFE programme is widely recognised as a high quality teaching qualification in the post-compulsory education sector. For those wishing to build on their qualification, progression to other programmes in Education, Social Work and Community Education is straightforward.

If participants wish to undertake further qualifications, progression to BA Professional Development (UG), MEd (PG) or Doctoral study (PG Masters) is straightforward.

As this is an in-service qualification, TQFE participants are normally employed as lecturers, trainers or instructors when they join the programme (they are required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of teaching in the course of their studies). Some employers award contribution related salary points for employees who gain the TQFE certificate.

The PGCE PCET is aimed at graduates who want to teach in their degree subject or graduates with a further qualification in the subject area in which they aim to teach. They will also be teaching or actively seeking teaching in the post-compulsory sector of education and training. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

The PCE PCET is aimed at students with a Level 3 qualification (NVQ3, OCN 3, A Level equivalence) preferably in the subject they are teaching or want to teach. The programme is for students who have experience in their subject areas and who wish to further their experience by teaching in the PCET or lifelong learning sector. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

Graduate and non-graduate entrants will follow the same learning pattern but, in compliance with the requirements of QAA, be taught at the differentiated levels for undergraduate study in Year 2.

- Prepare to Teach
The Preparing to teach 10 week taster course is for students with a Level 3 qualification who do not wish to undertake a two-year programme of study but who want to teach. This is an equivalence of Module 1 of the PGCE or PCE. Students would then be exempt from this module should they decide to apply for the PGCE or PCE at a later date.

The Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) sector is an area of growing importance in a world of rapidly evolving economic and social change. As individuals face the need to upgrade their skills in order to meet the requires on the world of work, educators in the Post 16 sector have a key role to play in helping them to achieve their learning goals

The Cardiff Met PCET programmes have been devised to introduce you to teaching in the post compulsory education and training (PCET) sector including tertiary, further and higher education, adult and community education, vocational and 14- 19 education as well as training in the private sector or work-based learning environments. These two-year part time programmes will engage you in both academic and practical assignments.

The ethos of the programme is predicated upon student-centred learning which includes the interchange ability of staff/student roles, the pooling of intellectual resources and experiences and the structured opportunities for skills-sharing.

The general aim of the programmes is to produce teachers or trainers who can demonstrate competence across the range of roles and tasks related to the design, delivery, management and evaluation of learning. Students will leave the programme equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that underpin the performance of those tasks expected of the professional educator or trainer in the post-compulsory sector.

The programme aims to provide a high quality and professionally appropriate experience that offers the opportunity for students to develop their abilities to plan and undertake projects related to practice; further to link their practice to theory in a critical and evaluative way. It aims to equip students with the skills to engage with the concept of reflective practice and to select areas of professional relevance for their study.

The overall aim is to create 'reflective practitioners'.

Learning & Teaching

The programme team recognises that adult learners bring with them experiences which can be used as a resource for learning. Consequently formal lectures are not a feature of this programme. We expect all sessions to involve students actively participating in their learning.

The overall emphasis will be on working together and effectively utilising the experiences and skills that the individual learners bring to the group. This student-centred approach allows students to take responsibility for their own learning. Tutors are seen as facilitators of learning, providing resources, supporting, stimulating and challenging where appropriate.

To this end the teaching methods on the programme will include:

Input from tutors. These can be useful in providing new or up-to-date information to larger groups provided there is an ongoing opportunity for questioning and participation. They will be used sparingly on the programme to generate interest in new subjects and provide information for future discussion, analysis and evaluation.

Small group work. This will be one of the key strategies utilised. The major aim of these activities will be to develop skills relating to thinking, discussion and the presentation of information. Students will be able to practise their communication skills, listen to other group members, support weaker peers and observe group dynamics in action. They will have extensive opportunities to develop their presentation skills in a safe environment and learn how to give encouraging and constructive feedback to their colleagues. Methods utilised will include:
- Ice-breaking exercises
- Team-building exercises
- Workshops
- Buzz groups and brainstorming
- Simulations
- Case-studies
- Role plays

Seminars. These will be led by programme members and will allow them to further develop their presentation and delivery skills. They will be designed to allow group members to explore issues relating to their own institutional settings or their academic specialisms.

Individualised learning periods. Directed self-study allowing programme members to learn at their own pace outside the framework of class activities. The number of hours of self-study varies for each student and it would be worth discussing this with your personal tutor at the start of the year.

Tutorials. Group members will meet with their individual tutors at regular intervals to reflect on their learning experiences, share concerns and problems and set learning targets.

Moodle is Cardiff Met’s virtual learning environment and you will be able to use this to access materials/information relating to the programme from a networked PC. Moodle will also be used for academic and social online discussion forum, blog discussions and for online learning resources.

Assessment

You may be assessed by a combination of assessment methods appropriate to the PGCE and PCE programme levels and may include:
- Written assessments (WRIT) such as reports, self-reflections, analytical documents, case studies, online blogs, peer assessments, essays;

- Presentations (PRES) and Microteaching sessions which may be individual and/or group; seminar; (non)-interactive; with audience;

- Practicals (PRAC) such as individual and/or group; coaching; mentoring;; performance;

- Portfolio (PORT) that includes a collection of evidence, frequently including a contextual statement; poster; website;

- Placements (PLAC) such as a fieldwork placement; school placement; experiencing the world of work.

The programme is continually assessed through module assignments and two hundred hours of supervised teaching experience to include 130 hours of direct teaching over the two years.

Students will undertake four observed teaching hours in Year 1 and four in Year 2. Each of these will require written preparation and also a self-evaluation report following the observation.

Employability & Careers

The PGCE and PCE PCET will qualify you to teach in Further and Higher Education, youth, adult and community education, 14- 19 sector, work-based education, training in HMForces, prison, industry and commercial training departments.

Students who have completed this course have gone on to part or full-time teaching in the post compulsory sector of education and training, usually teaching their subject and other subject related areas. All graduates leaving the course are signposted to Cardiff County Council and Cardiff Met’s Widening Access department as potential adult education tutors for outreach and summer school activities. .Some students are offered teaching opportunities by their mentor once they have graduated.

​Progression Routes:
Non-graduates successfully completing the PCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4 and 5. Students would be able to progress on to a degree programme in their specific subject discipline.

Graduates completing the PGCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4, 5 and 6. Students can then progress onto Masters programmes within their particular subject area.

This course is for anyone who is new to teaching and needs us to find them a placement, or who is already working as a teacher or trainer and wants to become qualified.

The course maps to the National Framework for teaching qualifications in Post-16 and Further Education and is recognised by the sector body, the Education and Training Foundation (EtF). It enables you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for Post-16 and Further Education, which is the Post-16 equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in schools. QTLS is currently awarded by EtF who charge a fee for membership and QTLS registration. An employer may be willing to pay the fee for you.

On the course, you

  • develop as a teacher

  • engage with the latest developments in the Post-16 and Further Education context

You will learn about the theory and practice of effective teaching and learning at Hallam, so that you can apply it to your teaching practice in placement. Your University tutor will carry out a joint observation with your mentor for four of these observations.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via taught sessions, (including lectures, presentations, discussions, and classroom group tasks), and a practical teaching element based in a partner-provider organisation, usually a further education college. You are also required to read widely and to carry out written assignments in your own time. The programme is assessed through written assignments, module tasks and formal and informal observations of practical teaching skills.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working for a very diverse range of employers. They typically gain employment as lecturers, classroom teachers and/or managers in FE colleges, sixth form colleges, secondary schools, independent training providers, adult education services and prisons. If you want to teach or train young people or adults, we offer a range of ways to achieve a post-16 PGCE or Certificate in Education. The PGCE and PCE Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) programmes are designed for those teaching/training or wanting to pursue a career in post 16 contexts, e.g. higher, further, adult, community, vocational training in industry, commerce or other professions, school sixth forms, 14-19 school/tertiary courses.

A key emphasis is placed on the connection between practice and theory throughout our programmes. We focus on achieving excellent outcomes for trainees to become outstanding professionals, who understand the power of education to transform the lives of individuals and fulfil individual potential.

A recognised teaching qualification is now essential for all teachers working in post-compulsory education and training. Obtaining this qualification can be a stepping stone to further study and for career development and progression in the sector.

The MSc ALLT is a degree aimed at professionals of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or modern foreign languages, which is taught primarily via distance/online learning. This innovative two-year part-time course offers a cutting-edge introduction to the linguistic and pedagogic knowledge and skills needed for teaching language in higher education. 

While the concepts covered in the course can be applied to all languages in most contexts, there is a strong opportunity for students to specialize in the teaching of English language in university settings.

A low-residency course, it is characterised by intense online interaction and feedback, using a range of communication media. Its small-group teaching format pursues the Oxford tradition of demanding much of students and giving them much in return.

What prior experience do you need?

Applicants are expected to have English teaching experience (normally at least one year), a willingness to reflect upon their teaching, and a commitment to work very hard undertaking an exciting intellectual endeavour.

How is the course taught?

The course is taught over two academic years, preceded by a week’s residential module in Oxford. Numbers on the course are kept low, to ensure quality of teaching and learning.

There are three distance-taught modules per year, spread over two eight-week terms from October to April. The assessment for each module comprises a take-home examination. In the third term of each year (May to July), students work on a dissertation project.

Students are admitted in the first instance as students on the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching. If you complete all the PGDip modules you may then progress to the MSc, subject to a satisfactory dissertation research proposal. You will then matriculate in absentia in Trinity term of your second year and complete your dissertation during that term, under the supervision of a member of the applied linguistics group.

Who teaches the course?

The tutor for this course is Dr. Heath Rose. Heath is an experienced teacher educator, having coordinated the M.Phil. in English Language Teaching at Trinity College Dublin before coming to Oxford, and previously having worked on The University of Sydney’s M.Ed in TESOL. Heath has been engaged in English Language Teaching since 1997, and has worked with students in university settings since 2003. In delivering the course, he combines this practical experience with his research background in second language teaching and learning. Heath is the co-author of Introducing Global Englishes (Routledge), and the forthcoming books Global Englishes for Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press), and Doing Research in Applied Linguistics (Routledge).

Heath will be supported by other lecturers and tutors in Oxford's applied linguistics research group, as well as a teaching assistant. This means that for each module there will always be two of three academics working with students and helping with learning questions and technical questions.

Gain the qualification you need to teach in the area of special educational needs in Post-16 and Further Education, previously known as Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PCET), and including 14-19 provision.

It is suitable whether you are new to teaching and need us to find you a placement, or if you are already working as a teacher or trainer within the SEN context and want to become qualified.

The course maps to the national framework for teaching qualifications in Post-16 and Further Education, the new Diploma in Education and Training for Disabled Learners (DET, previously DTLLS). The course is recognised by the professional body, currently the Institute for Learning (IfL) and sector body the Education and Training Foundation (EtF). It enables you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for Post-16 and Further Education, which is equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in schools. QTLS is currently awarded by IfL who charge a fee for membership and QTLS registration. An employer may be willing to pay the fee for you.

On the course, you

  • develop as a teacher in special educational needs
  • develop your knowledge and understanding of educational ideas and theories
  • engage with the latest developments for special educational needs in the Post-16 and Further Education context

You apply the course theory through your teaching practice. This consists of at least 120 hours teaching over either one year or two. During the course, University staff and your placement or workplace mentor assess your teaching practice eight times.

Key areas covered include • planning and preparing to teach • assessment for learning • teaching methods • behaviour for learning • using technology in teaching and learning • progression against the professional standards • understanding your wider professional context.

After successfully completing the course, you gain a level 7 qualification equivalent to DTLLS or the new Diploma in Education and Training, but at masters level, and you can use these 60 credits towards a masters course.

If you do not have an undergraduate degree or equivalent and need an initial teaching qualification, you can study our CertEd Post-16 Education and Training. This route is not available with the special educational needs specialism.

Placement
All students on this programme will undertake a teaching practice placement and your development as a classroom teacher will be assessed as part of the course. You will spend at least 120 hours, working with subject-specialist mentors who support you through your placement. We are fortunate to have a good choice of colleges and other providers, as well as some outstanding mentors in the field of post-compulsory teaching, with whom we work.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via taught sessions, (including lectures, presentations, discussions, and classroom group tasks), and a practical teaching element based in a partner-provider organisation, usually a further education college. You are also required to read widely and to carry out written assignments in your own time. The programme is assessed through written assignments, module tasks and formal and informal observations of practical teaching skills.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working for a very diverse range of employers. They typically gain employment as lecturers, classroom teachers and/or managers in FE colleges, sixth form colleges, secondary schools, independent training providers, adult education services and prisons. The programme can also serve as route towards higher qualifications.

Employability
This course will help you gain employment in a wide range of educational settings in the post-compulsory sector, in other industrial and professional contexts, and also, increasingly, in schools. As well as learning improved subject-specialist knowledge and expertise in pedagogy and assessment, you will gain a wide range of highly transferable ‘people skills’ which are essential for teachers: including empathy, patience, listening, cultural awareness and sensitivity. Through your teaching practice placement, you will also gain awareness of aspects of workplace life and the norms of professional behavior, around respect for others, equality and diversity, health and safety, rights at work, line-management and appraisal, inspection and quality assurance procedures, etc.

DIPLOMA/ProfGCE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Designed to meet the needs of teachers in a substantial role in further and/or adult and community education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14­19 year olds in schools, academies and vocational settings.

The course consists of six modules taken over two years or a one year fast track option is available at one of our partner colleges. Successful completion allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Duration: modular over one year full­time with six hours per week tuition in class or two years part­time usually three hours per week tuition in class; plus self-study time and teaching time.

SPECIALIST PATHWAYS IN ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING LEARNERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

For teachers of English (ESOL, literacy, functional skills) or maths (numeracy, functional skills) or working with learners with special needs, the Diploma, ProfGCE, Certificate and Award can also be taken as subject specialist qualifications.

To join the pathway qualification in the Certificate or Diploma, you need to have 50% of your teaching in the specific subject specialism. You will attend two modules in a subject specialist group at one of our partner colleges and benefit from working with subject specialists as well as learning about specific pedagogy for your subject.

QUALIFIED TEACHER STATUS LEARNING AND SKILLS

These teaching qualifications do not automatically confer ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’ (QTLS), so you will need to apply for this status post qualification. The process is currently under review so please check the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) website for current guidance.

Modules include self-directed study activities, investigations and e-­based learning.

You will be required to have a minimum of 100 hours teaching for the Diploma/ProfGCE.

For the Diploma/PGCE students are required to undertake eight teaching observations. These provide the opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and understanding, to improve subject specialist teaching and to receive practical advice.

Assessment

Assessments for each module are based on observations of teaching practice, individual reflections, entries in a progress log and academic essays/assignments.

It's an intensive 10-month PGCE, designed to bridge the gap between STEM research and school science and mathematics by recruiting able researchers who are good communicators, and to develop the relationship between schools and Imperial College London.
