Overview

The LLM in Tax Law provides a comprehensive programme of study in tax law. It is designed to equip lawyers for the substantive, procedural and technical aspects of tax practice, and to expand and deepen the knowledge base of established practitioners, but no previous knowledge of taxation is required. Modules cover Business Taxation, International Taxation, EU Tax Law, VAT, Intellectual Property taxation, Taxation Principles and Policy and US Taxation. They are taught by leading academic and practitioners, with a strong practical emphasis.

You will have the opportunity to take part in the annual events organised by Queen Mary tax law academics, such as the London Alumni International Tax conference, the Avoir Fiscal Anniversary EU Tax Conference, the EU Tax Students Conference, Berlin Conference on EU and International Tax and the Summer Tax Programme, as well as workshops and seminars focusing on topical issues and current legislation. These events attract high profile practitioners, industry experts, international academics and government bodies, including the HMRC and the European Commission.

Professional Exemptions

The LLM in Tax Law is highly regarded by firms looking for tax specialists.

The LLM in Tax Law provides a fast track to other professional qualifications. The programme will enable you to proceed to Chartered Tax Adviser examinations, without the preliminary stage of the Association of Taxation Technicians examinations. The EU Tax Law and International Tax Law modules will prepare you for the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Taught Modules

To specialise in this area, you must select 90 credits of modules from this list and do your compulsory dissertation in the field of Tax Law (45 credits). The additional 45 credits of taught modules can be in this area or can be unrelated and therefore selected from the full list of LLM modules.

All modules are 22.5 credits unless otherwise stated.

Note: Not all of the modules listed will be available in any one year and semesters listed can be subject to change. Any modules not available in the forthcoming academic session will be marked as soon as this information is confirmed.

The updated module list below represents the result of our ongoing modularisation of the LLM which is intended to offer students greater flexibility and choice of module options.

This programme is unique in the UK. It provides a route to obtain a MSc degree by production of a research thesis of a maximum of 40,000 words over a period of registration of 1 year (full time) or 2 years (part time). The subject matter of the thesis must be related to taxation, but the focus of the specific topic chosen would be by agreement between the student and the supervisors as part of the application and registration process.

The University of Birmingham has a long tradition of business research, with roots dating back to the appointment of the country's first Professor of Accounting, we have a longstanding history of researching and teaching in the area of accounting and finance. Taxation has been a field we have taught and researched actively for more than 20 years. You would therefore be joining and benefiting from a very active research community in participating in this programme.

Where the research subject matter chosen lends itself, students may also become members of the CHASM research centre – a joint venture between the Business School and the School of Social Policy, one of the leading such Schools in the UK. This Centre focuses on personal asset management, financial capability, inclusion and welfare inequality issues producing policy relevant output in each of these areas, so subjects including personal and wealth taxation and the impact of tax on the individual and household would fit into this Centre’s interest. Other subjects are of course however, equally suitable to this programme.

A research proposal is necessary as part of the application process for this programme (find out more about producing a suitable research proposal), and a Skype or telephone interview (or face to face if needed) is likely to be required as part of the registration process to be accepted onto this programme.

If accepted, students can expect to have two supervisors, one a subject expert in the chosen area of taxation (who would act as the lead supervisor), and one with wider taxation knowledge to support the contextualisation and application of the work more generally. The subjects chosen for the work would be expected to study the leading edge of thinking in the various fields of taxation. Where needed research training will be made available to the student.

The ACA qualification is from the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). ICAEW Chartered Accountants are always in demand and the ACA Qualification equips students to perform at the highest levels of accountancy, business and finance.

The majority of ACA trainees work in accounting practice and the qualification has a strong practice subject focus (audit, taxation) as well as covering other key technical accounting areas. An increasing number of students are now training in other sectors too.Once qualified, ICAEW Chartered Accountants work in all sectors, from accounting practices to commercial organisations, financial institutions, not for profit organisations and the public sector.

We offer tuition for the ACA Qualification at our Newport and Cardiff campuses. We offer a flexible portfolio of ACA courses that appeal to large or small training organisations (day release and block delivery) and we are an ICAEW Partner in Learning (City Campus Newport; Cardiff Campus application pending).

The ACA Qualification comprises three examination levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced. A Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (ICAEW CFAB) qualification is available upon completion of the Certificate Level, which is an excellent qualification in its own right for non-financial managers.

At the Advanced Level students are required to study a number of technical areas, which are then examined together in the Corporate Reporting and Strategic Business Management papers. These papers aim to simulate real-life business and accounting practice environments, and the concept is taken further with a final case study examination.

Careers

This programme offers candidates the opportunity to attain a postgraduate degree from a Russell Group university and simultaneously gain exemptions from all Professional Level examinations for the ICAEW, a globally respected professional accounting qualification of high reputation. The ICAEW's exams consist of three levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced Levels. Through our partnership with ICAEW, completion of our MSc programme can achieve exemptions from all Professional Level papers (ICAEW do not award exemptions for Advanced Level papers). Additionally students will be prepared for, and if successful in gaining credit for the relevant Professional Level modules, be entered into, the three ICAEW Advanced Level papers. Successful MSc graduates can impress potential employers by being fully exam qualified on completing the MSc and ICAEW exams. ICAEW members can go on to work in accounting, financial services and business management and many FTSE quoted company directors are ICAEW members.

Whilst students would need three years of relevant work experience under a training contract with a registered training provider to attain full ICAEW membership, they would be attractive targets for employers and could develop into careers within the accounting profession, financial services and business management.

It is advantageous, but not essential, to have completed the six ICAEW Certificate Level (CFAB) exams on entry to the programme or to have earned ICAEW credit for prior learning for those papers. Students who have not completed CFAB will need to do so (or be awarded exemptions for prior learning) prior to sitting the ICAEW Advanced Level Case Study exam.

Graduates from the MSc Accounting programme have secured employment with the likes of Deloitte, the Bank of East Asia, KPMG, and Grant Thornton.

Why ACCA?

ACCA is the global body for professional accountants, with 162,000 members, 428,000 students and 91 offices in 173 countries. The ACCA Professional Qualification is therefore recognised and supported by top employers around the world. On qualification, students become Chartered Certified Accountants.

The qualification provides a solid grounding in all areas of business and finance, including reporting, taxation, and audit. In addition, it covers the value added areas of leadership and management, strategy and innovation, and sustainable management accounting. Further, it allows specialisation with option papers at the final level.

ACCA students are required to pass exams and undertake relevant work experience to become Chartered Certified Accountants. Both the exams and the experience requirements are set and approved by ACCA. Students are also required to complete the ACCA’s professional ethics module. See http://www.accaglobal.com for more information.

Five reasons to study ACCA at the University of South Wales

1. Award winning
We offer award winning tuition. We were the PQ Magazine ‘Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year’ in 2010 and 2012, and we have been shortlisted in 2011 and 2013-2015. We also have award winning students. Two of our final year ACCA students have won national prizes in both 2013 and 2014 for final level exam performance. In 2014, presented at the ACCA Cymru Wales annual conference dinner, Lucy Whittington and Farzana Ahmed jointly won the Sir Julian Hodge Prize for highest scores in final level papers in Wales. In 2013, James Leaves won the Terry Weston Memorial Prize, and Lucy Saunders won the Sir Julian Hodge Prize. Furthermore, in 2011, Newport ACCA student Amanda Say was the winner of the PQ Magazine ‘Part-Time Student of the Year’ Award.

2. Choice – We offer tuition in key South Wales locations
Our Professional Tuition Hub is located at our state of the art City Campus on the banks of the river Usk in Newport City Centre. Opened in 2011, City Campus has excellent teaching rooms, library and student catering facilities. City Campus is easily accessible from across South Wales and border counties – being near Newport train station and M4 Junctions 27 and 28 – and has ample safe, secure parking on the doorstep. We also offer ACCA tuition at our Cardiff Campus Atlantic House building, situated in the heart of the Cardiff Financial and Professional Services enterprise zone and close to our Atrium building with its first class student amenities.

3. Excellent study and employer resources
Study texts and other resources (including progress tests and mock examinations for all papers, to reinforce exam technique) are supplied to our students as part of the tuition fee. Our tuition sessions can be recorded and replayed by students for the duration of the teaching year. Student performance reports for sponsoring employers are available on request.

4. An experienced and focused tuition team
Our permanent professional course tuition team consists of 11 qualified accountants and 1 qualified lawyer (plus other subject specialists). Members of the team:
• have significant accounting practice and industry ‘first career’ experience, as well as vast experience of teaching students to pass professional exams;
• also work/have worked for the private sector tuition providers;
• provide CPD sessions for the local professional bodies; and
• engage in bespoke CPD training for large organisations.

We are able to supplement our permanent tuition team with excellent local visiting lecturers. Our team regularly attend professional body Lecturers’ Conferences.

5. Professional body relationships
We work closely with the professional bodies, locally and nationally. For example:
• We were the headline sponsor of the ACCA Wales national conference in 2013 and 2014
• We are members of ACCA’s Exam Review Board
• We hosted the ICAEW BASE Business Game in March 2015
• Our Academic Manager is a member of the South Wales Society of Chartered Accountants committee
• We have hosted CIMA CPD lectures at City Campus for a number of years
• The professional bodies regularly sponsor student prizes

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The ACCA Professional Qualification is relevant to each and every sector of accountancy and finance and opens up opportunities to work in a variety of different industries and roles across the globe. ACCA students therefore train in all sectors, although a large minority work in accounting practice. Post-qualification, Chartered Certified Accountants can work at the highest levels as chief accountants, finance directors, CEO’s and accounting practice partners, and many change sectors across their careers.
